The vast army that marched past Madison Square Garden yesterday afternoon yelling, "Bring the Troops Home!" and "Fox News Sucks!" and "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!" were united by one great emotion: Contempt for George W. Bush. They denounced the President and all his works in blunt generic slogans and in distinctive New York-ese (my favorite: "Bush is a Tush"), and sang out "No more years!" This chant was almost the only hint that the marchers realize it is an election year. They hate Bush but they didn't show any love for his opponent, either. They didn't even mention him....

As the Republicans gather tonight, there's a cry from some quarters: Forget about Vietnam. Get to the real issues. To which I say, get real. More often than not, presidential elections turn not on policy but on personality. That's why the Swift boat debate isn't some sideshow. For the moment, it's the main event. Why? Because, fair or not, this hit on John Kerry's war record - and how he responds to it - tells us what stuff this Democratic challenger is made of. Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, of course, is the same anti-Kerry outfit whose TV ads the White House has disavowed any ties to — even though such newspapers as The New York Times followed a trail that seems to lead to the executive branch. On the eve of the 2004 Republican National Convention, there were signs that the Committee to Re-Elect the President, Richard Nixon's old gang, had been resurrected. This time they're working on behalf of George W. Bush. As in “Tricky Dick's” time, character assassinations, lying, media manipulation and testing the limits of legality are all fair game...

Recently I have read that John Kerry has told the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth that he was not referring to them in his senate speech in 1971, but to all the other Vietnam War veterans.
