COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina got its first national park Monday. Legislation creating the Congaree National Park, elevating the swamp from its national monument status, was signed into law as part of the interior appropriations bill, U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings said. "We've been working on this for years, but today, it finally became a reality," Hollings said. "South Carolina has its first national park." The swamp lies along the north bank of the Congaree River about 20 miles, southeast of Columbia. The park now can expand by 4,576 acres along the river, Hollings said.
