Eight of us gathered on Patriot's Corner at Shaw and Blackstone tonight to show our support for our Troops and the President's War on Terror. The weather co-operated and cooled a lot from the hot temperatures of earlier in the week. The wind was a little more than a gentle breeze, but did not cause us too many problems. Our opposition gathered on the South East corner and were out with signs when FriendAnn and I arrived at 5:00. There were about 2 dozen there with typical signs, IE: Bush Lied,Soldiers Died and No more American Blood for Iraqui Oil....

<p>LUCY!</p>
<p>Guess what today's Camp is about.....</p>
<p>Lucille Ball was a pathfinder who paved the way for all the women in TV to follow. Without Lucy, arguably, there might not have been a Carol Burnett or Mary Tyler Moore.</p>
<p>She proved women could be the leads and carry a show. Not one show, but several.</p>

<p>The formation of a word from a sound.</p>
<p>This is not so unusual a term among those who write about words—though linguists today often prefer others, like echoism or imitation. The Greeks had a word for it, and we have borrowed it through Latin: onomatopoiia, the process of making words, which derives from onoma, a name, and poiein, to make. But we have extended the meaning beyond just making words to making words in a specific way—by echoing a sound that is linked to the thing we want to name.</p>

Twelve of us gathered on our favorite corner in Fresno tonight for a "Support Our Troops" Rally. The weather was warm but a nice breeze helped to make it very pleasant. The peaceniks were not on the opposite corner; it is our understanding that they only meet on the first Friday of every month. We plan to start scheduling our rallies to coincide with theirs whenever possible. As usual, the motorists of Fresno were happy to show their support with horn honking, thumbs up and friendly waves. We did get a couple of one finger salutes but compared to the...

When many of us read or watch the news about the situation in Iraq, we might ask ourselves, "How long will our resolve last?" The last few weeks make it feel like longer than a year since U.S. and other coalition troops ousted Saddam Hussein's regime. Since then, more than 700 U.S. troops have died. While a new government is being developed, the attacks are an everyday occurrence. This war has cost the United States billions of dollars to have troops overseas - including some based at Fort Huachuca. Their stated goal is to maintain equipment and help establish Iraq's...

<p>Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.</p>
<p>We don’t use this much nowadays—dictionaries usually tag it as archaic or literary—except in the set phrase make the welkin ring, meaning to make a very loud sound. What supposedly rings in this situation is the vault of heaven, the bowl of the sky. In older cosmology this was thought to be one of a set of real crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if you made enough noise. The word comes from the Old English wolcen, a cloud, related to the Dutch wolk and German Wolke. Very early on, for example in the epic poem Beowulf of about the eighth century AD, the phrase under wolcen meant under the sky or under heaven (the bard used the plural, wolcnum, but it’s the same word). Ever since, it has had a strong literary or poetic connection. It appears often in Shakespeare and also in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales: “This day in mirth and revel to dispend, / Till on the welkin shone the starres bright”. In 1739, a book with the title Hymns and Sacred Poems introduced one for Christmas written by Charles Wesley that began: “Hark! how all the welkin rings, / Glory to the King of kings”. If that seems a little familiar, it is because 15 years later it reappeared as “Hark! the herald-angels sing / Glory to the new born king”.</p>

<p>This comes from Homer’s Odyssey, in which it was the name of the drug that Paris gave to Helen after he had abducted her to make her forget her old home. It derives from the classical Greek ne–, “not”, plus penthos, “grief”.</p>

Spring was in the air as we gathered to support the troops and President Bush on the corner of Shaw & Blackstone. Present for the rally were: Jim, Sheila, and Chris Robinson, Chadsworth, Ladyinred, Enterprise, JustAmy, and Notpoliticallycorewrecked. The traffic was very light due to it being Good Friday, but the honks in support of the troops were numerous. We had one gentleman that stopped by to support our troops and visited with Jim and Enterprise for a short time. I did not catch his name, but he was much nicer that the other visitors that came by. A group...

<p>Aficionados of Lewis Carroll will know a different meaning, which appears in the poem called Jabberwocky in his Through the Looking-Glass: “All mimsy were the borogoves”. Later in the book, Humpty-Dumpty explains its meaning as being a blend (he calls it a portmanteau word) of flimsy and miserable, so meaning “unhappy”. Carroll either invented it afresh or borrowed an existing English dialect word and gave it a new meaning.</p>

<p>The history of organized cheerleading started in 1898. The University of Minnesota was having a pitiful football season. One fan decided to write a letter to the Ariel, "The Official Paper of The University of Minnesota," and complain. He wrote "Everyone's been crying, 'Keep up your spirits, and we will have a winning team bye and bye.' I say give us a winning team and our spirits will take care of themselves."</p>
