4,000 federal workers fired due to ongoing government shutdown

The Trump administration revealed in a court filing that more than 4,000 federal workers were fired Friday as a result of the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The mass layoffs will affect government workers in at least seven Cabinet-level agencies, according to the document filed in the District Court for the Northern District of California, where federal employee labor unions are suing to stop the Trump administration from downsizing amid the lapse in federal funding.

The bulk of the layoffs took place at the Treasury Department and the Department of Health and Human Services, where approximately 1,446 employees and up to 1,200, respectively, were axed.

The Department of Education fired 466 employees; the Department of Housing and Urban Development let go of 442 employees; the Department of Commerce terminated 315 employees; the Department of Energy cut 187 employees; and the Department of Homeland Security laid off 176 employees.

The Justice Department filing notes that other agencies have issued “a general ‘intent to RIF’ notice.”

The Environmental Protection Agency, for example, notified approximately 20-30 employees that they may be fired in the future.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office separately issued shutdown-related RIF notices to 126 employees on Oct. 1.

A good start, but:

The Environmental Protection Agency, for example, notified approximately 20-30 employees that they may be fired in the future.

Really? 20-30 MAY be fired?

That whole agency has to GO!

It’s a sliver of a start, now get rid of entire agencies and their unions.

Why did you take 11 days for this to start happening and why are the numbers so low? That should read 40,000 or 400,000. I hope they have more planned for today tomorrow and Monday.

During these shutdowns - it’s the unessential folks that don’t come to work (I was an essential person during the Obama shutdown) and they usually get paid in the end anyway...these must be the “unessentialest” of the unessential....

Cue District Judge Iwannabebig who will rule that President Trump must rehire all 4k and give them a 100% month raise.

I knew a guy several years ago that rerired a few years before he really wanted to, saying he didn’t like what he saw coming and figured he was better off getting out while the getting was good. That was before the great government psych op code named “Covid-19”. I have to wonder if even he thought the world would melt down like it has.

I agree. During the Obama shutdown and during COVID I was essential and had to man some desks to keep certain operations going. Making decisions and signing papers for people two steps higher than me because they were older and couldn't take the risk.

How unessential are you to be the first in Federal government let go?

I retired at the end of 2022. Certain sections of the office were actively campaigning against my bible on my desk. And the office was hiring DEI as fast as possible and making the workplace stink with their constant jabber about their personal lives. If I had really thought a second Trump presidency was in the works, I might have hung it out, but I decided to serve a different master.

Now I pastor a small country church, farmers and watermen, who never ever talk about that kind of stuff. The biggest arguments are on which of two competing Italian restaurants are better. And who will get grill duties for the next church picnic.

That is a ridiculous statement. ICE is Homeland Security and is getting rid of illegal aliens as fast as it can.

The statement puts you in agreement with Illinois Governor Pritzker and Governor of Oregon
