SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A nine year old boy made a touching gesture to a Slidell police officer, but the officer had one regret about the chance meeting, so he reached out to the public for help. Officer Joe McMahan was driving when another person asked him to pull over. After pulling over, a woman asked if she could give something to McMahan. The nine year old, identified as Jayden Witsell, stepped out of the passenger side of the car and approached the police cruiser. The boy asked if he could give something to Witsell. "For a moment, I didn't...

Vice President Cheney is buying a house in posh St. Michaels, Maryland - he is, that is, if you believe the rumors swirling around this Eastern Shore community on the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. According to the Washington Post, it's set amidst nine lush bayfront acres and includes extensive gardens, ornamental pools and spectacular views of the bay behind it - and it boasts among its...

Greetings, I just received a FReepmail from a friend of mine, Kathe (now known as Two Dawgs) who is a longtime FReeper. She told me that her husband passed away on Monday. Kathe has been here a long time. She used to be the leader of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of FReerepublic. I had the privilege of meeting her husband Terry at the House Manager's Dinner FR event in May of 1999. He was a regular guy and I am sure that Kathe misses him terribly. Please say a prayer for Kathe and leave a note for her on this thread....

A professor at Yale for nearly five decades and the author of more than twenty books, Harold Bloom is one of the world's best-known literary critics. He has also amassed one of the world's greatest personal libraries. The NEW YORK TIMES says that his "collection of some 25,000 volumes encompasses most of American and British poetry, criticism, and literary history, some with his handwritten notes in the margins. There are rare first editions," as well as great artworks and personal letters from famous writers. But the seventy-two-year-old professor has shocked the academic community by deciding to give all of this...
