It just became a bit harder to watch Spanish-language TV in the US, whether or not it's online. Dish and Sling TV have lost a trio of Univision stations (including its main channel, UniMás and Galavisión) after the two failed to end a carriage pricing dispute before a contract ended. Dish insisted that Univision was "drastically" raising rates to make up for declining viewership, charging "almost double" for Dish and Sling customers as it was for Univision Now. It even took to offering free over-the-air antennas to viewers in some regions to win them over. Meanwhile, Univision framed Dish's demands...

NFL players responded to President Trump's criticisms of players protesting police brutality by taking a knee during the national anthem by kneeling en masse Sunday morning. The opening of the NFL Sunday slate of games took place Sunday morning in London, and many players from both the Baltimore Ravens and the Jacksonville Jaguars took a knee during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
  • It's time to kill the cable box with apps

Commentary: A proposal by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler calls for cable companies like Comcast to "unlock the set-top box." Unlocking isn't enough. The box should die, once and for all, and be replaced by apps. There's no technological reason that Comcast, or Time Warner Cable, or Charter or any other cable TV provider needs to provide physical hardware at all. There's no need for warehouses full of cable boxes or arduous "service windows" where the technician supposedly shows up "sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m."-- or not--to fix (or more likely just replace) your device. Full-fledged pay...

(I could live without it, but The Chief of Procuremenet will not.) Is Hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime the best option for someone who has a few favorite shows? Will show be ONE WEEK behind on episodes or ONE SEASON? (assuming these shows on cable are not available right away) Dish is not an option (she won't allow it on the roof) Will likely be getting DSL from a phone company.

Meet Sling TV, an Internet-driven endeavor from DISH Network that is the first legitimate alternative to traditional cable TV. It’s a service that’s free of contracts and friendly of pricing, and it offers tantalizing flexibility to the tech-savvy user. The service needs some work before it’s ready to captivate the average user, but with evolution, it has the potential to be special. The service is currently available on a handful of devices, including Amazon’s streaming devices, iPads and iPhones, Android phones and PCs and Macs. In the coming months (and Sling’s been working quickly), it will hit the Xbox One...
  • CES: Dish Goes After Millennials With Sling TV Alternative to Cable, Satellite

    01/05/2015 9:15:01 PM PST · by Mozilla · 14 replies
Dish Network recognizes that people, especially millennials, aren't subscribing to pay TV and they're hoping to make that segment of consumers new customers with the introduction of Sling TV, an over-the-top service that costs $20 a month with no contract beyond a month-to-month commitment. Dish announced Sling TV, which has no direct connection with Slingbox or Sling Media (although both have a link to EchoStar, the parent of Disney Network), at CES on Monday, when CEO Joe Clayton introduced it as "a brand for this consumer segment" that "offers our new customers programming that is tailored to their wants and...
