Social Security recipients have been hit with payback demands following overpayment - and now the government agency is facing questions over how billions of dollars were incorrectly paid out. Numerous reports have told the stories of people, many of whom are vulnerable or suffer from a disability, who have been asked to pay back large sums due to the service accidentally giving them too much money. Social Security payments are made for a variety of reasons. SSA benefits are paid based on your earnings record if you are aged 62 or older or if you are a person with a...

Payments to Social Security recipients may increase a bit more than expected in 2024, but an advocacy group says they'll still fall short of what retirees need. The Senior Citizens League said Wednesday that the Social Security cost of living adjustment, or COLA, will likely be 3.2% for 2024. That would add about $57 to monthly benefits, raising them to $1,790 for the average recipient, according to the group's estimates. The cost of living adjustment is calculated based on an average of the inflation readings for the months of July, August and September. Specifically, it's based on the Consumer Price...

The meeting, which included the worldâs leading economies, announced last week that they had agreed to build the necessary infrastructure to implement digital currencies and IDs.

Among America's numerous social programs, none lifts more people out of poverty each year than Social Security. As of 2021, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimates that 21.75 million people, including nearly 15.4 million seniors aged 65 and over, were being lifted above the federal poverty line due to their monthly Social Security benefit. Unfortunately, this vital program that provides benefits to approximately 66.7 million people each month -- 49.6 million of which are retired workers -- finds itself on shaky ground. The 2023 Social Security Board of Trustees Report estimates that America's top retirement program is facing...

Algerian officials claim that âmultipleâ warning shots were fired before its military directly shot at a group of jet skiers who had crossed over from Morocco, killing two of them. The deadly encounter occurred Tuesday after five jet skiers drifted into Algeria territory while exploring the waters around the Moroccan resort town of Saidia. âGiven that the maritime border area is witnessing intense activity by drug smuggling gangs and organized crime, Coast Guard members fired warning shots,â Algeriaâs defense ministry said in a statement. âAfter multiple attempts, shots were fired on a jet ski,â officials added. One of the survivors,...

In a speech to a Seattle crowd Wednesday, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm made the claim that lower oil imports improves U.S. energy security. Praising Bidenâs historic green energy funding and 100% clean electricity goal by 2035, Granholm said âWith all this electrification, we could slash our net crude oil imports by almost 60%, and that strengthens energy security.â Granholm, who appeared with Vice President Kamala Harris also said Harris "has been amazing inside the White House as the champion for clean energy." One of the most common critiques of Bidenâs green agenda is that it has thus far achieved the...

Several vulnerabilities that affect most VPN products out there can be exploited by attackers to read user traffic, steal user information, or even attack user devices, researchers have discovered.âOur attacks are not computationally expensive, meaning anyone with the appropriate network access can perform them, and they are independent of the VPN protocol being used,â claim Nian Xue of New York University; Yashaswi Malla, Zihang Xia, and Christina Pöpper of New York University Abu Dhabi; and Mathy Vanhoef of KU Leuven University.âEven if the victim is using another layer of encryption such as HTTPS, our attacks reveal which websites a user...

Most of the worldâs population today lives in countries facing critical water security issues.Dealing with issues such as declining freshwater availability, demand from growing populations, insufficient infrastructure, or flawed water governance can impact how easily a countryâs population can access water. I assumed that school boards were cowards if they didnât have a publicly announced plan to physically defend their students. I was wrong. The issue is more involved. Many of those boards adopted an attitude of âDonât ask and donât tell.â There are unresolved issues we face as we protect our kids at school. Our school boards need our help to do the right thing.

A Tennessee-based engineer is being investigated by the Pentagon for a âcritical compromiseâ of communications across 17 Air Force facilities. The unnamed engineer, who hasnât been formally charged, is alleged to have taken home more than $90,000 worth of government radio technologies and gained âunauthorized administrator accessâ to the Air Forceâs Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The security breach comes just three months after a junior Air National Guardsman allegedly leaked a massive number of classified documents online. Jack Teixeira, although relatively low-ranking, used his top-secret security clearance to post hundreds of Ukraine war documents on the Russians and...

A Mastodon server that focuses on left-leaning political activists, recently had an unencrypted copy of its database confiscated by the FBI.Source: Pixabay The recent news that a copy of Kolektiva.socialâs database was confiscated by the FBI as the result of a raid at the home of one of the organizationâs administrators, should serve as a cautionary tale for activists taking advantage of Mastodonâs federated nature to form online communities. Specifically, you should should do some research into the security in place at an activist-focused server, as well as the servers privacy policies.Actually, the same advice would hold even if you...

I am planning to install an around the house night vision camera system. Hardwired. My electrician can run the negligible additional wiring needed. I would like it to record to an on site recorder. I would like it to alert us when people arrive and allow us to look through phone or tablet. I would like to be able to move it to internet surveillance when we are off the property. Is this doable? I see systems prices all over the map. At what sort of cost Who could do it? An electrician? I have had big deal national alarm...

Liberal Suburbs Have Their Own Border WallThe New York City suburb of Scarsdale, located in Westchester County, New York, is one of the countryâs wealthiest communities, and its residents are reliably liberal. In 2020, three-quarters of Scarsdale voters cast ballots for Joe Biden over Donald Trump. One can safely presume that few Scarsdale residents are ardent backers of Trumpâs wall on the Mexican border. But many of them support a less visible kind of wall, erected by zoning regulations that ban multifamily housing and keep non-wealthy people, many of them people of color, out of their community....The huge inequalities between...

A group of cybersecurity researchers has uncovered what they believe is an intentional backdoor in encrypted radios used by police, military, and critical infrastructure entities around the world. The backdoor may have existed for decades, potentially exposing a wealth of sensitive information transmitted across them, according to the researchers. While the researchers frame their discovery as a backdoor, the organization responsible for maintaining the standard pushes back against that specific term, and says the standard was designed for export controls which determine the strength of encryption. The end result, however, are radios with traffic that can be decrypted using consumer...
