NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Now the race begins. With Dan Rather announcing on Tuesday that he plans to step down as anchor of "CBS Evening News" after 24 years, speculation about his replacement has kicked into high gear. Insiders say that chief White House correspondent John Roberts and "60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley are on a short list, with the polished, anchor-chair comfortable Roberts the favorite. The announcement about Rather's retirement had no word about a replacement for what is one of three top jobs in TV journalism. While it will be the second network anchor slot open in...

Who Will Replace Dan Rather? No Decision Has Been Made Nov 24, 2004 11:18 am US/Central NEW YORK (CBS) With Dan Rather's announcement that he will step down as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News in March, speculation is on about who will next occupy one of the most visible chairs in American journalism. CBS News President Andrew Heyward and CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves have both indicated that potential candidates inside and outside CBS will get a look before a final decision is made. Moonves told The Wall Street Journal, "We're still contemplating a lot of people...

I was speaking the other day with Scott Pelley of CBS News's "60 Minutes" about the mood in Iraq. He had just returned from filming a piece there and he told me something disturbing. Scott had gone around and asked Iraqis on the streets what they called American troops - wondering if they had nicknames for us in the way we used to call the Nazis "Krauts" or the Vietcong "Charlie." And what did he find? "Many Iraqis have so much distrust for U.S. forces we found they've come up with a nickname for our troops," Scott said. "They call...

Dan Rather's acknowledgment that he erred in broadcasting a recent "60 Minutes'' report about President Bush's National Guard service has further complicated two of the most delicate questions in television news: when will Mr. Rather relinquish the anchor chair of "The CBS Evening News,'' and to whom? CBS has never disclosed a timetable for replacing Mr. Rather, who turns 73 next month and who has been the anchor of the nightly news since March 1981. But in the weeks before Sept. 8, when the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes'' broadcast its report based on documents it now says cannot be...

On Thursday, members of the 101st Airborne, 3rd Brigade were "wondering when and if they're going to get a piece of the fight," CNN's Ryan Chilcote said. On Friday, they got their piece. The 101st launched a "deep attack" Friday night from a forward base in central Iraq, pounding suspected Republican Guard placements less than 100 miles southwest of Baghdad. Based in Fort Campbell, Ky., the 101st has more helicopters than any other Army division, Chilcote said. It uses Apaches for air assaults and Black Hawks for troop movements. Friday night's action caused spirits to soar, at least temporarily. Chilcote,...

<p>Dan Rather of CBS has long been considered by conservatives to be the poster boy for liberal media bias. But in the current war with Iraq, ABC's Peter Jennings is making Mr. Rather's network look downright hawkish.</p>
<p>On March 20, Mr. Jennings practically pleaded with Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., Delaware Democrat, to lead an anti-war movement: "A large number of people in the country are opposed to this ... but look to members of the Democratic Party, particularly, to be sort of their port in a storm, their place to manifest their dissatisfaction."</p>

The Battle For Umm Qasr Correspondent Scott Pelley (CBS) For the Marines of Fox Company, the war began with light and thunder, alongside British Royal Marines. The first casualties that night were their preconceived notions of the enemy. Sergeant Robert Coppola, from L.A., was among the first Americans who rolled through the breach and into the fire. “It was supposed to be a relatively easy target--just a lot of workers, not any resistance at all,” he says. “And then, before we came in, they told us there was a tank regiment in the area and they had a bunch of...

U.S. Fights Iraqi Republican GuardMarch 24, 2003 U.S. forces have reportedly begun their first attacks on Iraq's most elite and believed most competent and best-armed troops: the Republican Guard. The New York Times reports U.S. Army forces began their battle for the so-called "Red Zone" - the land surrounding Baghdad - with air strikes late Sunday by several squadrons of helicopters and over 30 surface-to-surface missiles. One U.S. pilot in the battle was reportedly wounded by small arms fire, but was nevertheless able to fly back to the Army base. The target is reported to have been the Medina...

2002-09-10 01:17 pm PT Tomorrow on September 11, President Bush has awarded an exclusive interview to CBS correspondent Scott Pelley where he'll be asked to discuss the aftermath of the attacks. Pelley will be the envy of his fellow journalists around the world since hundreds of news organizations were vying for an interview on the biggest news day of the year. So why didn't CBS's star anchor, Dan Rather, get to interview the president? During Bush 41's presidency, CBS News had the policy that "only Dan Rather interviews the president." But following an earlier confrontation Rather had with Bush...
