A sweet elderly pit bull was left tied to a tree in Queens with a bloody gaping chest wound — and it’s still a mystery who ditched the sickly pooch. The poor 8-year-old dog was left for dead with advanced-stage mammary cancer near Atlas Mall in Glendale Tuesday, according to City Council members Bob Holden and Joann Ariola. Neighbors reported the abandoned dog to the lawmakers after confusion about whether the call was a police matter — and bystanders rushed her to a shelter with help from the rescue group Lend-a-Paw, according to a council source. “[A rescuer] had suspected...

The so-called Dolton “Dictator” wants to stay in power. Tiffany Henyard, the self-proclaimed “super mayor” of Dolton, Illinois announced her reelection bid Tuesday — despite facing countless controversies during her first term that have landed her under federal scrutiny. “Attention, Attention, Attention, Attention,” she said on Facebook. “I am running for Reelection for Mayor of Dolton.” But Henyard, who clinched her first term in office in 2021, hasn’t done much fundraising leading up to Tuesday’s announcement. Her campaign, Friends of Tiffany Henyard, didn’t record any contributions or expenses between July and September, according to the most recent campaign disclosure report.

The Jewish historian Josephus, who lived in the first century AD and was an eyewitness to many gruesome crucifixions, characterized this form of execution as “the most wretched of deaths.” .... with the suppression of the Spartacus revolt in 71 BC, Rome lined the famous Appian Road stretching from Capua to Rome with 6,000 crucified rebels. In AD 7, a minor revolt in Judea was brutally squelched, resulting in the crucifixion of 2,000 Jews in Jerusalem. During the siege of Jerusalem by Titus in AD 70, 500 Jews were crucified each day for several months. Once the victim was condemned...

Disturbing bodycam video captured the moment a towering 6-foot-tall woman was fatally shot by a veteran Virginia cop just seconds after she charged at him with a knife and repeatedly slashed him. Sydney Wilson, 33, was fatally shot by Fairfax County officer Peter Liu in the hall of her apartment building in Reston, just outside Washington D.C., on Sept. 16 after cops were called to carry out a welfare check on her, police said. The graphic footage, released by police on Monday, showed an “agitated” Wilson opening and then abruptly slamming her door in the officer’s face after he knocked...

“Columbus noster est!” “Christopher Columbus is ours!” These words of Leo XIII, in his encyclical Quarto Abeunte Saeculo, issued July 16, 1892, on the IV Centenary of the discovery of America, are like a distant echo to us, at a time when iconoclastic fury in the United States of America is destroying the figure of the Italian navigator. Leo XIII states in this encyclical that Christopher Columbus’s venture: «is in itself the highest and grandest which any age has ever seen accomplished by man; and he who achieved it, for the greatness of his mind and heart, can be compared...

Do any FReepers have experience with cell phone extenders such as the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Network Extender ASK-SFE116? This is not a repeater, instead, it works through and existing Ethernet Connection to your computer / the Web, and functions like a little "mini-tower" in your home. I did find this useful vid: https://www.verizon.com/support/verizon-lte-network-extender-setup-video/ However, I've not found much info. regarding range. My guess is that it is similar to a typical Wi-Fi router. Unfortunately these "extenders" do not connect via a Wi-Fi router.) It also appears activation can be a problem if buying a used unit, as evidently the...

There’s a misconception that Scotch whisky (specifically single-malt) isn’t affordable. And sure, there are plenty of long-aged, limited-release bottles that will set you back the equivalent of a mortgage payment. On the flip side, there are plenty of well-priced, accessible expressions just waiting to be added to your whisky collection. It’s time to dive into what “affordable” means in the Scotch-whisky world. It doesn’t mean cheap, and it doesn’t mean bargain. It does mean that the bottle is reasonably inexpensive. To us, this means expressions that are less than $100.

A Jewish spa owner believes her Brooklyn business was targeted by antisemitic vandals Monday morning after she discovered its window shattered. Allison Tray, 53, was left “shaking and crying” when she woke up to find her business of 20 years, Tres Belle Spa in Boreum Hill, defaced in what she said “absolutely felt like [a return of] Kristallnacht,” — referencing the 1938 Nazi attacks that killed nearly 100 Jews. “They brought it to my doorstep [on] today of all days,” the small business owner added, noting the one-year anniversary of the Hamas massacre and abduction of more than 1,200 Israelis....

For anyone who’s experienced a quality tequila shot with a crisp, ice-cold lager, it’s clear that hops and agave are delicious partners. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that beer aged in tequila barrels can create a sophisticated brew with nuanced flavors. The process is straightforward, but the results can be profound. Freshly brewed beer is placed in casks that once held tequila and as it matures, the beer takes on a variety of flavors from the wood and transforms into something new.

The ex-millennial mayor of Southampton Village is allegedly a bullying creep who tried to pimp out his secretary for political gain, according to an bombshell new lawsuit. Jesse Warren — the owner of a high-end boutique in the elite enclave who previously made headlines for being evicted from his home by a political rival — is now facing explosive claims from his former employee, Miranda Weber. “Warren regularly had volatile outbursts, made inappropriate and gendered comments, and encroached on Ms. Weber’s personal life,” says her Suffolk County Supreme Court suit, filed late last month. Warren — the town’s youngest mayor...

When it comes to exercise for heart health, you don't want to peak too early in life. Recent research suggests that if you want to protect yourself against high blood pressure as you age, you need to play the long game and keep your exercise levels up through middle age. But social factors can make this more difficult for some people to do than others, according to a study of more than 5,000 people across 4 US cities. "Teenagers and those in their early 20s may be physically active but these patterns change with age," study author and epidemiologist Kirsten...

Your kidneys are some of the most important organs in your body. Not only do they remove waste and excess fluid from your blood, but they maintain the levels of potassium, sodium and other essential minerals that your body needs to survive. The kidneys also create hormones that regulate important health factors like blood pressure and bone strength. But despite all that, they still remain underappreciated compared to organs like the heart or lungs. The kidneys do a lot, so they can become overworked without your notice. Roughly one in seven American adults has chronic kidney disease, which can cause...

Marine biologists are taking a closer look after the remains of a young minke whale washed ashore in New Jersey Friday — less than 24 hours after another dead whale was found floating off Staten Island. On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard spotted a 16- to 18-foot-long whale “floating in the Lower Bay/Raritan Bay area.” A tracking tag was planted on the carcass, which federal investigators with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipate will land near Sandy Hook, NJ, within days. Once ashore, the deceased animal will be examined.

A list published by GOBankingRates is going viral because it shows just how much it costs to live in America’s 50 biggest cities in 2024’s economy. The list, put together by measuring data from US Census, Zillow, BestPlaces and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, determines “living comfortably” as needs not exceeding 50% of one’s income. This is known as the 50-30-20 rule or plan, where 50% of one’s income meets the costs of living, 30% is expendable, and 20% remains in savings. Of the top eight most expensive cities in the US, California’s biggest population hubs take up a whopping...
