Coolmaterial ^ | 10/09/2024 | By Christopher Osburn

There’s a misconception that Scotch whisky (specifically single-malt) isn’t affordable. And sure, there are plenty of long-aged, limited-release bottles that will set you back the equivalent of a mortgage payment. On the flip side, there are plenty of well-priced, accessible expressions just waiting to be added to your whisky collection.

It’s time to dive into what “affordable” means in the Scotch-whisky world. It doesn’t mean cheap, and it doesn’t mean bargain. It does mean that the bottle is reasonably inexpensive. To us, this means expressions that are less than $100.

There’s a fair amount of difference in price between these. Lagavulin and Oban near the $100 price tag, Johnny Walker Black more near $35-40.

Make sure you get an Islay, and Lagavulin 16 is the best.

Save a lot of money by buying some cheap whiskey and macerate some cigar butts in it for a few days and then strain. Same nasty flavor but a whole lots cheaper. yer welcome.

I like JW Black.

Tried peaty Laphroaig once, tasted like paint stripper to me.

Have tried several of the “usual” singles, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, others I’ve forgotten, OK.

Local Total Wine has some $4,000 - $5,000 scotches, don’t know if they ever sell any :)

I like “Jura,” a smooth whiskey.
Also, “The famous Grouse,” an inexpensive blend that includes “Maacallan,” in the blend.

Th Peaty whiskeys are a matter of taste. I have not been able to enjoy them.
Both of my Grandmothers were Scottish, Clan Cameron and Clan Davidson.
I enjoy having a wee dram in honor of their memory!
Cheers!
