A political newcomer outraised Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar sevenfold in the latest quarter of his primary campaign to unseat the controversial congresswoman in Minneapolis. Antone Melton-Meaux, an attorney, raised $3.2 million between March and April to fund his race to snatch the Democratic nomination away from Omar. Melton-Meaux reported having $2 million in cash on hand to keep him afloat ahead of the Aug. 11 primary. Omar did not fare as well as her competitor when it came to fundraising. A former NFL safety took a big step Tuesday night toward a whole new career. Burgess Owens, who played from 1973-1982 for the New York Jets and the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, won Utah’s Republican primary for a U.S. House seat, according to The Associated Press. Owens, 68, who played college football at the University of Miami, was leading in the 4th Congressional District race by nearly 20 percent over the next candidate, FOX 13 of Salt Lake City reported.

A New York state lawmaker who sought to replace a retiring member of Congress refused to concede defeat Thursday following Tuesday’s Democratic primary, claiming the election was plagued by “intentional black voter suppression.” State Assemblyman Michael Blake, an African-American candidate, finished in second place in the 15th Congressional District contest’s in-person ballot count, the New York Daily News reported.
