US aerospace giant Boeing said Friday that a customer had canceled an order for 32 of its best-selling single-aisle 737 aircraft. In a weekly table on changes in orders and deliveries for commercial aircraft, Boeing reported 32 orders for the short-to-medium-range plane were canceled, leaving net orders for 737s so far this year at zero. The canceled order was placed before 2011 and the customer did not want to be identified, Boeing spokesman Doug Alder told AFP. The Chicago-based firm has taken 32 new orders for 737s in the year to date: Alaska Airlines, 15 planes; the US Navy, six;...

Boeing (NYSE: BA) announced today that it expects delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner in the third quarter of this year. The new delivery date reflects the impact of an in-flight incident during testing last November and includes the time required to produce, install and test updated software and new electrical power distribution panels in the flight test and production airplanes. "This revised timeline for first delivery accommodates the work we believe remains to be done to complete testing and certification of the 787," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We've also restored some...

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company won a $300 million order from Orient Thai for 12 of Russia’s first major passenger planes since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Itar-Tass reported, citing the Thailand-based airline. Sukhoi agreed to deliver 12 of the mid-range Sukhoi Superjet 100 airliners before 2014, the news service reported from Bangkok. Orient Thai plans to use the aircraft on domestic flights, gradually replacing its current fleet, the report said, citing Orient Thai chairman Kajit Habanananda. The airline may hire Sukhoi to maintain the fleet, he said. Delivery of the first two planes is planned for November next year,...

FARNBOROUGH, England (AFP) - With record oil prices crippling airlines worldwide, Canadian planemaker Bombardier said here Sunday it planned to launch its eco-friendly CSeries single-aisle passenger jet in 2013. German carrier Lufthansa has signed a letter saying it was interested in buying 30 CSeries jets and possibly up to 60, Bombardier said in a statement. Launch customer Lufthansa could be followed by other airlines after Bombardier said it had received "significant interest" worldwide regarding the new plane. "The CSeries family offers the greenest single-aisle aircraft in its class," said Gary Scott, president of Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. "These game-changing aircraft emit...

SYDNEY (AFP) - A passenger jet has made a historic landing on a new blue ice runway in Australia's Antarctic territory and regular flights are expected to start within a week, officials said Wednesday. But trips on the Airbus A319 to the Wilkins Runway will be for scientists and research staff only, with no plans to open the airlink to tourists, project manager Charlton Clark told AFP. The runway is four kilometres (2.5 miles) long, 700 metres thick and moves about 12 metres southwest a year because of glacial drift. In the first trial landing on Monday, the plane pulled...

I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket." I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.

China's big-plane dream fraught with difficulties Sun Jun 19, 1:19 AM ETBEIJING (AFP) - China's ambition of building a large passenger jet by 2020 could be fraught with difficulties, not least competition from global giants Airbus and Boeing, experts said. Aviation officials said last week that China should act now to build a 150-200 seat 'trunk liner' to cater for booming domestic demand, as Boeing and Airbus were busy developing bigger planes. "If China does not roll out its own trunk liner by 2020, then the country will not succeed in 2030 or 2040. So it is really a rush,"...
