After eight years away from newspapers, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed is creating a new comic strip called "Opus," starring his beloved penguin of the same name. The Washington Post Writers Group, which will syndicate the strip, is expected to officially announce Breathed's return this Sunday. The reclusive Breathed, who rarely gives interviews, could not be reached yesterday for comment. The new strip will appear on Sundays in The Washington Post starting Nov. 23. Breathed drew the wildly popular "Bloom County" and "Outland" comic strips, which introduced the world to the naive Opus and his hairball-spitting sidekick, Bill the Cat....

Okay, probably not the best ever. But knowing how Freepers just love to shoot down a boaster, I figure this is bait they won't be able to resist. ;^)The Farewell Opus is a grand old tradition here at Free Republic, and there are certain rules one should follow, but I'm going to break some of them. FIRST... I'm supposed to moan about how Free Republic used to be so great, but now it's changed and become nothing but a feuding, controlling zionist forum, or Bush-lovers forum, or whatever. Not at all. I've been on FR since October 1999. I first appeared...
  • Catholic Curious about Opus Dei...?

    08/05/2003 9:18:20 PM PDT · by PeteyPete · 21 replies · 284+ views
I'm a Catholic since birth, but haven't actively participated in the church in over 10 years. The recent problems w/ homosexual priests and pedafile's have left me even more so disillusioned w/ the church and it's inability to tackle moral issues. I'm coming to a point in my life where i'm starting to have questions about my spirtuality, and Catholicism in particular. I've read a little about Opus Dei and how they represent a more direct interpretation of Catholicism, sans the politics, pedafiles, and parsing of words. Does anyone have any opinion about the Opus Dei sect within the catholic...

On the ground floor of the White House is the Map Room, so-called because it was here that Franklin Roosevelt used to get his briefings on the progress of World War II. Over the mantel is the last map FDR saw before his death. It shows American, British, and Soviet troops racing toward Berlin. It also shows a frightening concentration of German forces in the Nazis’ last redoubt, the mountains of Bavaria. We now know of course that this last redoubt did not exist. American intelligence had been deceived. And it’s possible that policymakers also deceived themselves. Roosevelt, for reasons...

To all who post on FreeRepublic, I believe the time has come to speak to you on a matter that what I feel is greatly important. I have been on FR, posting since a week after the September 11th attacks. And..... at that time..... I was 11. I am 13 now. You may have thought I was a grown adult, with a family and kids. Nope. Never happened. I thought that no one would accept me here, being a kid...no one would take me seriously or respect my opion, or want to hear it, for that matter. Alot of kids...

I need to take a break from FreeRepublic for a while. My heart and my head are not right, and I won't solve the issues here, nor will I inflict my own neuroses on y'all. Its been real, its been fun. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
  • WHY I QUIT THE G.O.P

WHY I QUIT THE G.O.P.: A somewhat typical email I have received this last week: I was raised during the '80s in the midwest in a moderately Republican family. Conservative enough, but not rabidly so. Anyway, after the brief fliration with leftism that's obligatory for all normal people in their early '20s, I eventually drifted back to the GOP. That was until I met my wife ... let me add my black Democrat wife. She thought I was insane when I told her what my affiliation was; she herself was pretty traditional, but couldn't countenance how any decent person could...

Well, it was a fun ride and I made a LOT of great friends on Free Republic... including one who came to my wedding. But nothing lasts forever, and maybe in a way it's a *good* thing, 'cuz there's no convincing some people that no increase in power makes that power any more pure. JimRob has drummed me out of Free Republic. Here's the reason he put on the screen that popped up on my end: Your posting privilege has been revoked. Reason: Democrat Now, I'm not a Democrat. Haven't been one since 1994 when I changed to Republican, and...
  • Is Law And Order Conservatism Dead? (It Sure Looks Like It)

I saw a few threads here yesterday about the Inglewood cop thing. I expected to see comment posts all about revulsion at the PC media's latest propaganda. I expected to see criticism of the Uncivil rights leaders (racebaiting demogogues) that will use this to spread hatred of white people everywhere and justify criminal behavior (and of course take from our wallets). But I didn't. Instead I saw a very few brave conservatives standing up for law and order being relentlessly bashed by a much larger bunch of, well, I don't know what. As to the matter discussed: The criminal idiot...

I've been on here since 1999. In the old days, there was a united effort against the Klinton Administration. Now it has turned into nothing more than govt worshipping sheeple. Bush can do no wrong. There has been wide spread censorship here now as well for any that dare oppose the great one... Sir, yes sir!! In the old days, we questioned authority. In the old days, there were debates among different parties. In the old days, we even had reporters like Jack Thompson here. We fought the New World Order. We also had SERIOUS discussions. What the hell happened...

I had noted an opus over on the quot;Serious Forumquot; and that Texaggie had made a good comment about how they are a version of Munchausens' Syndrome. Now even though some people around here annoy me, I don't want to leave, but I was thinking of posting a good opus or two just for the attention. I mean that thread has 127 posts! So, any good suggestions or comments on how to ctreate an attention grabbing swan-song? I am also testing to see just how far the moderators will go.
