Chicago's effort to expand O'Hare International Airport got another helping hand from the federal government Tuesday in the form of $410 million for three runways. Add the $337 million transportation officials promised in 2005, and the $747 million in federal cash set aside for O'Hare is the largest financial commitment ever made to a single airport project, transportation officials said. "It's an enormous amount of money, but it really is the kind of investment that has to be made at O'Hare in order to continue it to be the premiere international airport that it is," said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray...

Federal officials seized more than 700 pounds of cocaine on Friday from an international flight landing at O'Hare International Airport. Officers from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection found the drugs on an Aeromex flight from Guadalajara, Mexico, which landed at 11 p.m., officials said. About 330 bricks of cocaine were found in the commercial airliner's cargo compartment during a routine inspection of baggage. The bricks were wrapped in cellophane, soaked in axle grease and covered with rubber and packaging tape. The drugs have a street value of about $6.7 million. The four small cardboard boxes containing the cocaine were...

It sounds like a tired joke--but a group of airline employees insist they are in earnest, and they are upset that neither their bosses nor the government will take them seriously. A flying saucerlike object hovered low over O'Hare International Airport for several minutes before bolting through thick clouds with such intense energy that it left an eerie hole in overcast skies, said some United Airlines employees who observed the phenomenon.

Sorry for the vanity post, but I needed advice from Freepers familiar with Chicago's O'Hare airport. Due to some last-minute family issues, I had to get an additional ticket for our upcoming Christmas trip. The one extra ticket I got gets a family member through O'Hare on Christmas Eve, and she has to get from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 to transfer from American Airlines to United (hey, not my fault, folks! I'd purchased my tickets a long time ago). I've only been to O'Hare once, and that was just to get to a nearby gate, so I can't offer...

Revelations in the Peoria Journal Star earlier this week that the Peoria/Champaign area is one of seven in the United States on a terrorist “circuit” were frightening. “Terrorists enter the United States in San Francisco and Los Angeles, then move to Phoenix, then Denver," reported Phil Luciano of the PJS. "From there some head to Peoria and Champaign. Some terrorists remain in those communities, while others head on to New York City" (emphasis added). Luciano was provided this information by Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy, who received it at a recent FBI conference held in Springfield. Names of larger cities...

Chicago police on Thursday morning arrested one of the 11 Egyptian students who were wanted for failing to show up for an exchange program in Montana. At 8 a.m., about four hours after heightened security restrictions went into effect following a foiled terror plot in Britain, a man at the Delta terminal at O’Hare International Airport tried to use a ticket to go to Bozeman, Montana, but his ticket was out of New York rather than Chicago, police Supt. Philip Cline said at a news conference. A disturbance then ensued. “He was raising his voice for the level for the...

On Wednesday, June 21, CAIR-Chicago’s Executive Director Ahmed Rehab and intern Susan DeCostanza along with other leaders in the Chicago Muslim Community attended a tour of U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations at O’Hare International Airport last week. The meeting was part of an effort to build relationships between the Muslim community and different government and security organizations that work in the airport in order to proactively facilitate communication, avoid cultural misunderstandings and help to educate travelers about the ways that they can possibly avoid unwanted delays at the airport. Brian Humphrey, Director of Field Operations, commenced the meeting by...

Nageeb Abdul Jabar Mohammed Al-Hadi -- if that's even his name -- is just one of nearly 750 people U.S. investigators want to know more about in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. He has at least four aliases and two different birth dates. He is a Yemeni, with a Michigan driver's licence and a Detroit wife. He was on a plane from Frankfurt, Germany headed for Chicago when it was diverted to Toronto. Two restaurants at O'Hare Airport have been allowed to rake in millions of dollars, even though the Daley administration learned back in 2002 that the company running them was probably a phony minority "front" for Panda Express and Antoin "Tony" Rezko, a top fund-raiser for Gov. Blagojevich. Crucial Inc. won the O'Hare concessions in part because it was certified as a minority-owned business. Its largest shareholder was listed as Jabir Herbert Muhammad, son of the late Nation of Islam founder, Elijah Muhammad.
