The Author Who Got A Big Boost From bin Laden Historian 'Glad' of Mention As Sales of Book Skyrocket By David Montgomery Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, January 21, 2006; Page C01 Twenty-four hours after Osama bin Laden told the world that the American people should read the work of a little-known Washington historian, William Blum was still adjusting. Blum, who at 72 is accustomed to laboring in relative left-wing obscurity, checked his emotions and pronounced himself shocked and, well, pleased. "This is almost as good as being an Oprah book," he said yesterday between telephone calls from the world...

OSAMA bin Laden has turned an obscure book by a radical Washington historian into one of the nation's best sellers by recommending it in his latest verbal attack on the United States. Since the Al-Qaeda leader mentioned "Rogue State: A Guide to the World's Only Superpower" in his tape last Thursday, William Blum's book has gone from 205,763 on the Amazon.com list of best sellers to number 27 on Saturday. As he fought off media attention, Mr Blum, 72, who lives in a one-room apartment in the US capital, told US media he had no regrets about the boost from...

The former chief of the CIA’s Osama bin Laden unit says bin Laden’s “truce” offer comes from a long-established Muslim tradition of warfare -- sending a clear signal to the United States that an al Qaeda attack is more than likely. Twenty-two-year CIA veteran Michael Scheuer, who wrote “Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terror,” says bin Laden has offered his final warning before launching his next strike. “Warning your enemy before you attack him is very much a tradition in Islam from the prophet to the times when Saladin was fighting the Crusaders, he would...

William Blum’s “Rogue State: A Guide to the World’s Only Superpower” was ranked 209,000 on Amazon.com’s sales list before bin Laden mentioned it in an audiotape released on Thursday. By Friday, the book was No. 30 on the Amazon.com list. Bin Laden said Al Qaeda group was preparing more attacks in the United States but also told Americans, “It is useful for you to read the book ‘The Rogue State.’“ “I...

Bin Laden's New Tape Narrated From The Astral By Red Square1/20/2006, 2:22 pm "I made bin Laden's audio recording and passed it on to a friend at the DNC," says Miss Courvoisier, psychic worker of Brooklyn, New York An Interview With Bin Laden's Personal PsychicSo is Osama bin Laden dead or alive? On January 19, 2006, Al-Jazeera provided another clue, airing a new audiotape purportedly from bin Laden, who offered the U.S. a truce, while also threatening to strike again. CIA experts have confirmed the authenticity of bin Laden's voice, but they didn't elaborate about why the al Qaeda...

Published: January 21, 2006 12:10 PM ET NEW YORK While much of the liberal blogosphere, and political figures such as Sen. John Kerry, remain inflamed over comments by MSNBC's Chris Matthews on "Hardball" on Thursday--in which he suggested that Osama bin Laden, in his latest video tape, sounded an awful lot like fillmmaker Michael Moore--The New York Times has also now been linked to Osama by another cable news pundit. On Friday night, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough weighed in on the subject, going beyond Moore to claim that bin Laden was also borrowing language or ideas from the likes of Howard...

Bob Schieffer: Osama bin Laden Used John Kerry's Talking Points 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden may have borrowed some of Sen. John Kerry's talking points for the audiotaped message he released on Thursday - veteran CBS newsman Bob Schieffer said Saturday. Asked whether bin Laden had expressed "almost the same" sentiments that Kerry did during an appearance on Schieffer's "Face the Nation" broadcast in December, the CBS anchorman told WABC Radio's Mark Simone: "Well, he did. That's exactly right." Back then, Kerry complained to Schieffer: "There is no reason that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes...

Analysts search bin Laden tape for cluesLARA JAKES JORDANAssociated PressWASHINGTON - Osama bin Laden's warning this week about an upcoming attack on the United States answered at least one question about the al-Qaida leader: He is still alive, or at least was until very recently. But it opened a new inquiry by counterterror officials who are analyzing the bin Laden audiotape for clues about when and where it was made - and, most importantly, whether it sends a signal to carry out his threat...

On January 19, 2006, Al-Jazeera TV broadcast excerpts from a new audiocassette by Osama bin Laden, in which the Al-Qaeda leader threatens further attacks on the U.S., "immediately with the completion of the preparations.” At the same time, bin Laden makes a plea to accept and uphold a long term truce under fair conditions [if America offers it to him], which will provide security and stability to both sides and will make it possible to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan. "We are a nation forbidden by Allah to betray and lie," promises bin Laden. Contrary to mistranslations in the media, from...

Is Osama bin Laden looking for contracts for his family's construction firm? -- snip -- The second reason for issuing the tape is to prepare Arab opinion for the turning of the tide against the Jihadists in Iraq. With the Arab Sunnis now part of the democratic process in Iraq, the foreign Arab Jihadists fear that they will soon face the ire of the Iraqis rather than occasional operations launched by the U.S. forces. And if things come to that, the Jihadists know that the Iraqis will not be fighting them in accordance with the Marquis of Queensbury rules.

OK, quiz time. Tell me who said this: Insurgents are winning the conflict in Iraq and [be] warned that security measures in the West and the United States cannot prevent attacks there. And tell me who offered up this gem: The idea that we're going to win the war in Iraq is an idea which is just plain wrong. But before you answer, consider this one as well: The U.S. Army is broken, worn out, and living hand-to-mouth from fighting in Iraq. They may not be able to meet future military threats to this country's security. They're barely getting by....

A Duke professor says he is doubtful about Thursday's audiotape from Osama bin Laden. Bruce Lawrence has just published "Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden," a book translating bin Laden's writing. He is skeptical of Thursday's message. "It was like a voice from the grave," Lawrence said. He thinks bin Laden is dead and has doubts about the tape. Lawrence recently analyzed more than 20 complete speeches and interviews of the al Qaida leader for his book. He says the new message is missing several key elements. "There's nothing in this from the Koran. He's, by...

Osama bin Laden is nothing if not a quick study - as his audiotaped message, replete with echoes of complaints from Iraq war critics on Capitol Hill, amply shows. In fact, the terror mastermind invoked one Democratic Party talking point after another in his bid to convince America that George Bush was leading to U.S. down the path to ultimate destruction. When Ted Kennedy, for instance, complained last year that Saddam Hussein's torture prisons had been reopened "under U.S. management," Osama was clearly listening. Warming to Kennedy's theme, the al Qaeda chief griped: "Jihad (holy war) is ongoing, thank God,...

An audio statement by Osama bin Laden broadcast on al-Jazeera television Thursday appears to be related to recent threats made by an al Qaeda front in Europe and points to an imminent attack, according to a Washington-based analyst. Christopher L. Brown of the Hudson Institute earlier this month analyzed the Jan. 6 videotaped message of Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's chief deputy. The tape, Brown said, and other al Qaeda communications indicated a high probability that al Qaeda would launch a major terrorist attack in the next 30 days and that the United States was the likeliest target. Cybercast News Service...

Osama bin Laden's taped message is the strangest evidence to emerge that the U.S. is winning the "information war" with al Qaeda and is new proof that al Qaeda's famed media unit is in tatters, says Rich Miniter, author of Disinformation: 22 Media Myths That Undermine the War on Terror. (Click here to order from Amazon.) It was not long ago that the propaganda arm of al Qaeda could easily get videotapes onto al Jazeera in hours. But the new tape played on al Jazeera took upwards of five weeks to move from bin Laden to al Jazeera. Could al...
