Virginia will be under a nightly curfew from midnight until 5 a.m., and social gatherings will be limited to 10 people under new public restrictions meant to stem the surge of COVID-19 expected to go into effect Monday. Gov. Ralph Northam announced the new restrictions Thursday afternoon, citing an untamed spike of COVID-19 cases in the state in the middle of the busy holiday season.

Gov. Ralph Northam on Friday afternoon announced new COVID-19 restrictions for the state, limiting gatherings to 25 people both indoors and outdoors ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) and First Lady Pamela Northam have tested positive for the Chinese coronavirus, they revealed Friday. According to a statement, a member of the governor’s residence staff “who works closely within the couple’s living quarters” fell ill and tested positive for the virus. On Thursday, both the governor and first lady received a PCR nasal swab test, both of which came back positive. While the governor is currently asymptomatic, his wife is “currently experiencing mild symptoms,” according to the press release.

Convicted first-degree murderer Robert Dwayne Godfrey is set to walk free with parole after serving only 26 years of his 200-year sentence due to a review from Virginia governor Ralph Northam's state parole board. Police are searching for a gunman who shot five people, all teenagers, inside a Fairfax County, Virginia, apartment building early Tuesday morning. The incident happened around 1 a.m. in an apartment complex on the 7900 block of Janna Lee Avenue, in the Alexandria section of Fairfax. After receiving multiple phone calls, officers arrived at the scene to find all five victims suffering from gunshot injuries. Ralph Northam (D) announced Tuesday that northern Virginia suburbs outside Washington, D.C., will begin the next phase of reopening as the spread of coronavirus appears to be slowing in the region. The new guidelines, which go into effect Friday, allow the opening of restaurants for indoor dining at half capacity and allow gyms and fitness centers to reopen indoors at 30 percent capacity. The city of Jacksonville’s inventory for Confederate memorials lists three monuments and eight markers on city property related to the Civil War. As of Tuesday morning, there was one less, and Mayor Lenny Curry said the others are coming down, too. Crews were seen overnight using a crane to remove a Confederate monument in Jacksonville’s Hemming Park, the downtown city plaza framed on two sides by City Hall and the Federal Courthouse. The statue and nameplate were hauled off well before daylight, leaving an empty pedestal.
