INDIANAPOLIS -- Travis Johnson is just the type of voter the Democratic Party hopes to win back in its effort to regain control of Congress in the November elections.     Baking in the sun at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the 23-year-old Danville, Ill., resident wears a black T-shirt sporting NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson's face. He looks like the epitome of the young, white, socially conservative, working-class voters who have been key backers of Republicans in the past decade.     But with U.S. troops dying in Iraq, unrest in the Middle East and gasoline prices soaring, he is not sure how he will...

Libs trying to understand NASCAR is both funny and illuminating. Here's a recent offering from DU: Pockets (135 posts) Original message Could someone please explain NASCAR to me? Is NASCAR a rich man's sport, and if so, why are the masses so anxious to fund their hobby? I'm not much into any sport but NASCAR seems like the macho counterpart of equestrian atheletics... never having watched either I may be way off base.ohio_liberal Do you mean "rich man's sport" as in the competitors, or the spectators? Pockets (135 posts) Response to Reply #1 10. The competitors I know racing takes...

That's George W. Bush, not Kurt Busch [though Kurt's hoping they'll say the same about him after the final 4 races this season]. A little over a week ago, the guys at NASCAR.com ran a front page article detailing Presidential endorsements from NASCAR drivers, team owners, TV commentators, and members of the sport's sanctioning body. The article detailed the near unanimity of their endorsements going to President Bush. It seems to further prove over time what NASCAR's 'King', Richard Petty, has famously said: "You'd be hard-pressed" to find a Democrat in the garage these days. When pressed for further details...

This morning at the Martinsville Speedway, myself and a fellow Bush supporter held a pro-Bush demonstration near the entrance of today's Nextel Cup race. Thousands of vehicles and hundreds of pedestrians passed by on their way to the racetrack. We were well received for the most part as 90% of the comments were positive. Over 300 Bush-Cheney bumper stickers and 100-200 lapel stickers were given out to Bush supporters. A few yard signs were given to those who made donations to our local Republican organization. I arrived at the rally venue around 7:30 am to set things up. My partner,...

Dale Jr. OK with staying Dale Jr. By TOM SORENSEN The Charlotte Observer Dale Earnhardt Jr. stepped off an airplane Wednesday night, walked to a car and was whisked downtown to the Westin Hotel, where he met with four reporters. En route to the second floor, Earnhardt Jr. passed Jeff Gordon, nicely dressed in a sports jacket and holding a glass of wine as he met with members of his foundation. Earnhardt Jr. might not have been able to get in. He wore a brown T-shirt, brown cap and jeans. Earnhardt Jr. is second in the Chase for the Nextel...

The last part of the article: It is more than a rumor that Bush will return to the state for the NASCAR race at New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon on Sept. 19. He is scheduled to attend the start of the race — with its 100,000 spectators — before going to another event. And we can expect television advertising to intensify. The Kerry campaign just purchased $50 million in national ads, mostly for the 20 battleground states, and new ads begin airing this week. The Bush campaign will also begin a new round soon.
  • ROADMAP TO A REPUBLICAN MAJORITY

November 18, 2002: The election was a Republican sweep and a big win for President Bush. In one close race after another, the Republican emerged triumphant, with only a few exceptions. Despite predictions of a cakewalk, even the revered Walter Mondale went down to defeat in Minnesota, thus throwing a wrench into the Democrats' latest strategy of digging up the corpses of 1980s candidates when today's candidates proved inadequate or unavailable. One can't help feeling very good about this, and indeed it is a very good thing. But it is also dangerous. We must be very careful not to over-interpret...
