One of 16 people who tried to enter the United States by crossing the Rio Grande near Fabens on Sept. 30 turned out to be a child molester, Border Patrol officials said. Carlos Mendoza-Lopez, 27, from Guerrero, Mexico, first gave agents a false name, but a database using fingerprints revealed he had been convicted of fondling a child and had been previously deported. He was booked into the county jail, and the 15 others in the group were returned to Mexico.

<p>Dr. R. Scott Hitt, an AIDS specialist and gay activist, said he touched one patient inappropriately in August 2000 and crossed a boundary with another patient one month earlier, according to a formal accusation filed by the Medical Board of California.</p>
