San Diego – A former sailor aboard a San Diego-based ship allegedly praised a deadly terror attack on a U.S. destroyer and communicated with a British man arrested on suspicion of having terrorist ties, according to a court document unsealed Friday. The sailor on the USS Benfold, whose name has not been released, allegedly sympathized with the jihad cause and sent e-mails to anti-Western Web sites run by Babar Ahmad. British police arrested Ahmad, 30, earlier this week on a U.S. extradition warrant charging that he used the Internet to help Taliban fighters recruit and raise money. The USS Benfold...

Does anyone have any idea why the text of my replies (or replies to me) would run off the screen to the right? It never used to do that? I've tried the F5 key and using various size text (but that only makes the sentences run off the screen in smaller or larger sizes). Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's a pain to have to scroll right to read the full text of someone's reply. Thanks DentsRun

New Post editor Bret Stephens apparently agreed. Publisher Tom Rose was furious and ordered Hoffman fired. The full page ad appeared last Friday. According to Aviv Lavie writing in the rival Haaretz English edition, senior staff...

Hunt for hidden web messages goes on 18:13 12 July 02 NewScientist.com news service Computer enthusiasts have been searching for messages hidden in web site images following new claims that the al-Qaeda terrorist network is using this technique - steganography - to communicate. However, one expert in the field warns the images that have been flagged up as suspicious after initial examination are almost certain to be cleared after full analysis. Peter Honeyman, at the University of Michigan, told New Scientist: "You get a lot of these. We call them false positives." On 10 July, USA Today reported that US...

Psychology Persuasion May 2nd 2002 From The Economist print edition Scientists are uncovering ways of making messages more persuasive. Politicians and salesmen use such tricks already. Who can afford not to read on? AKG YOUR correspondent was not sure whether to write this piece. But Eric Knowles, a professor of social psychology at the University of Arkansas, was very convincing. He said that he had experimental evidence to support a new approach to persuasion—one that works on removing people's inhibitions, or lowering their resistance. Dr Knowles is so compelling that he has managed to persuade America's National Science Foundation...
