Massachusetts senators unanimously agreed Tuesday that a panel should suggest a new state seal to replace the 122-year-old version that Native Americans largely view as symbolizing white supremacist violence. The Senate voted 39-0 to approve a Sen. Jason Lewis resolve forming a special commission tasked with designing a new seal and state motto and with studying ways that the existing version, which depicts a Native man standing beneath a disembodied arm and sword, "may be unwittingly harmful to or misunderstood by the citizens of the commonwealth."

According to campaign finance records, Polis, a Democrat, donated $1,000 to Antone Melton-Meaux, a Minneapolis attorney who is running as a Democrat in the primary race for Omar's seat, on Monday. Melton-Meaux has significantly outpaced Omar in terms of fundraising. Massachusetts landlords in need of rent payments are hoping a federal judge will soon end the state’s eviction ban amid the coronavirus pandemic, a lawyer representing property owners tells the Herald. Landlords in a federal lawsuit in Boston’s U.S. District Court are arguing that the eviction moratorium is unconstitutional, said attorney Richard Vetstein, lead counsel for the property owners. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law Friday morning a $1.1 billion supplemental budget that covers some of the state’s COVID-19 spending and designates June 19 a holiday to celebrate Juneteenth. The spending bill was sent to the Republican governor’s desk earlier this month with funds toward child care providers, food banks, personal protective equipment, the state’s contact tracing collaborative, hospitals and other health care programs. Baker said much of the bill, as it covers COVID-19 spending, will be reimbursable by the federal government.

A Massachusetts restaurant is repealing its “racist” dress code, with the owner apologizing to protesters for not realizing the impact of his policy, according to reports. About 100 demonstrators gathered outside Nathan Bill’s Bar and Restaurant in Springfield to protest a policy that prohibited baggy blue jeans, long white T-shirts, do-rags and baseball caps worn backwards. A picture of the dress code spread across social media, with many criticizing the policy as directed at African Americans.
