Sen. Edward Markey has spent a greater portion of the past two years away from his state Massachusetts than just about any other member of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, according to his travel records.
Rep. Joe Kennedy, his Senate primary opponent, had previously attacked Markey over his lack of time in the Bay State, claiming he was "legislating from afar." Markey released the records on Sunday to stop the scrutiny behind his lack of time in the state.
Markey spent just 275 nights or 38% of his days in Massachusetts at his childhood home in Malden, according to WCVB. He spent less time in Massachusetts over the past few years than any Congressional member, a fact ABC affiliate was able to determine after examining the travel record of eight MA Congressional members. Reps. Katherine Clark and Ayanna Pressley did not provide the outlet with that information.
Congressman Kennedy slept here 509 nights during the same two year period at his home.
The majority of the time Markey spent in Massachusetts was this past year during the pandemic, March through April. In 2017, Markey spent just 77 days in the state.
Rep. Lori Trahan spent more nights in the state than Markey, even though she just took office in January 2019. Even Elizabeth Warren spent more time than Markey in 2019 in Massachusetts, when she was still a presidential candidate.
Most of the time Markey can be found at his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
During Sunday night's Massachusetts Primary Senate debate, Kennedy slammed Markey for being absent in the state he's supposed to represent.
Recommended CDC Director Says There are More Suicides and Overdoses than COVID Deaths Micaela Burrow "You have to be present to hear them," Kennedy said. "You have to go out and ask, not tell. You have to listen, not dictate."
In the debate, Kennedy and Markey sparred over issues like criminal justice, immigration, and returning kids to school during the pandemic.
Markey has been serving as a Massachusetts senator since 2013, after taking over for John Kerry after he became the Secretary of State for the Obama administration in 2012.
Currently, Markey trails Kennedy in the polls by double digits, with an Emerson poll in Jun
I’m not talking about our comic friend from La.
We will see if the Kennedy name is still political gold in Massachusetts.
I think this is the kid who gave the response to the State of the Union speech one year, in front of a car being repaired in a car repair place? It was an uninspiring speech in my opinion, don’t remember much about it. But perhaps the liberals get thrills up the leg from anyone named Kennedy.
Isn’t it their birthright?
As a Mass Republican this has been fun to watch. Ed Markey is about as big a scumbag as you can get, so I am not upset by anyone beating him.
Kennedy, while a Kennedy has at least a sense of his own entitlement. And he has a sense of humor.
In one of the debates Kennedy went after Markey for not visiting the Western MA’s Three Counties. Kennedy said that the politicians out here thanked him for visiting. They told him he had visited more in three months than Markey has the entire time he’s been a Senator.
Then Kennedy paused.
Then he said, “I’ve been out here twice.”
The laughter was great: Markey looked stupid; and the population of the 3 counties understood once again that we should split the state at I495.
This Kennedy is STUPID.
How stupid.
SO STUPID that he attacked Markey
for not mis-representing cities that have not
existed since before BOTH were born.
Not "our" Kennedy, the solon from the Pelican State. He gives them not thrills up the leg but pains in the neck.
Yes, it’s their birthright. People such as Kennedys, Clintons, Cuomos, etc. think it’s their divine right to reign and rule over us.
Congressman Kennedy slept here 509 nights during the same two year period at his home.
And he’s got sworn affidavits from 509 women to prove it.
Not saying anything about the new Kennedy Hope, but Ed Markey is the embodiment of fading low energy. He was never very dyamic, and he’s been on the job a long time.
Markey is 74 years old. He was elected to the House in 1976. In 2013 he became US Senator. He’d be 80 years old at the end of another term. He’s a loyal Dem stiff—most notable thing he’s done was to be an early endorser of AOC’s Green New Deal. Definitely done for desperately needed publicity.
Hopefully he will finally move out of Chevy Chase MD. What a swamp.
Kennedy would be an improvement over Markley and he may be too dumb to do much damage.
Sen. Kennedy of Louisiana is a true Son of the South and one of the few senators who seems to actually remember what his state’s voters sent him to Washington for.
Is he related to them?
One of the biggest Kennedy legacies has to be fat Teddy getting a bill through Congress to open the flood gates of immigrants from third world shithole countries and restricting white folks from European countries. The last thing we need is another philandering Kennedy from Mass.
I guess partying at the Kennedy Compound on Martha’s Vineyard counts as time in state.
We need another Kennedy in the Senate like we need another female trapped in a car submerged under water.
They are trash.
