So, an older relative wants a laptop so he can surf the web from his recliner. His computer skills consist of being able to turn the computer on, open his browser, and do simple word processing/printing. He's tired of viruses and malware. I've been talking up the Macbook. He's decided on the Macbook pro with 17 inch monitor, Way more computer than he needs, but he likes the big monitor because it will be easier on his eyes. All sounds good, right? That is, until I go online and look at the price. Yikes! Nearly $2500. He can afford it...
  • Apple to rely on Intel's Sandy Bridge graphics in future MacBooks, AMD GPUs in MacBook Pros?

Apple will use Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs in its future laptops, no surprises there, but what's interesting about these forthcoming machines is that some of them might rely solely on Intel's chip for both general and graphical processing tasks. That's the word from the usual "sources familiar with Apple's plans," who expect "MacBook models with screen sizes of 13 inches and below" to eschew the inclusion of a discrete GPU and ride their luck on the improved graphical performance of Intel's upcoming do-it-all chip. There are currently no sub-13.3-inch MacBooks, so the suggestion of one is surely intriguing, but the...

To the right of the word Quizulous on your Safari toolbar of your Macbook, you'll see a downward pointing arrow. Click and hold that arrow, and a drop-down menu will show up. Way to the bottom is a sentence saying something like, click here if you want to delete the Quizulous toolbar. Click that, and Yay! the Quizulous toolbar is gone at last!
  • $$ isn’t one of the three Rs (public high school students required to buy $900 Apple MacBooks)

BEVERLY’S NEW high school, set to open in November, should be the envy of its counterparts in other towns. With the school’s emphasis on technology, students will be able to work together more easily, including through video conferencing, and learn how to use advanced computer programs. Unfortunately, Beverly is also obliging parents to pay extra for this tech-utopia — a requirement that violates the spirit of public education. Not only must every student have a laptop computer, but it must be a specific, expensive type: a MacBook with a price tag of $900. And since the school system couldn’t find...

  • Looking for a humorous photo

I am looking for a humorous photo. The photo is of a 20-something year old white kid sitting in an auditorium with an Apple laptop. The caption is something like "Liberal Liveblogging - because when the revolution comes, I already know which Starbucks window I'm going to smash with my bike lock" Seems apropos of the G20 protest. Can someone help me out?

Ok, I'm looking to get my first laptop made by Apple. The only thing is, I'm not sure which one to get. So I decided to check with the Mac experts on FreeRepublic. I will be getting this in June of next year so I know the possibility of Apple coming out with something new between now and then. I will be using this laptop for every day sorts of things...email, surfing, school work when I start working on my Ph.d, etc. I don't do video editing nor do I make music. The laptops I'm looking at are the simple...

The heated debate over whether Apple is tricking you into believing you can see millions of colors on your Mac has come to a quiet conclusion. The Chicago Tribune noted last week (spotted by AppleInsider) that Apple has settled a lawsuit brought by two professional photographers claiming that the company falsely advertised the capabilities of their MacBook Pros as being able to display "millions of colors." The plaintiffs claimed that Apple could achieve those heights only through "dithering."How many colors can you see? Thousands? Millions?(Credit: Apple) There's an option in the Displays screen, under System Preferences in Mac OS X,...

My wife is trying to watch a YouTube video. Every ten seconds or so it just stops, and she has to hit the pause/play button to continue. I'm on the same network, but I have no problems with my Dell Inspiron 5100 if i watch YouTube. We're using wireless, communicating with a Dlink router. Thanks for any thoughts.

Well, my experiences of both types of laptop this week has left me reeling. Where do I start? Let’s start with the Mac, a MacBook with OSX preloaded. The MacBook was a joy to look at, very well finished with a glossy white sheen that looked and felt good in the hand. And light. On opening the thing had obviously been placed in suspension, and it just started. It found my network and was ready to use. The interface, OSX, with its one button for the mouse, threw me for a few minutes as I am VERY used to Windows...
  • Trying to print from a MacBook onto networked Windows PC printer

I have a MacBook Pro. It is wirelessly attached to a router to which are attached a Dell laptop, a Toshiba laptop and a Dell desktop. The Dell desktop runs XP home with SP2, has a Canon MP500 printer USB-attached. The Dell laptop and the Toshiba print remotely, over the wireless network, with no problem. However, I can't get the MacBook to print. When I click on system preferences, I can see the workgroup name, and the name of the Dell desktop. However, I can't get a printout from an application on the Mac Book. Is there anything I should...
  • How to attach MacBook Pro to WEP-encrypted wireless network

    09/06/2006 7:57:03 PM PDT · by rudy45 · 32 replies · 10,591+ views
I have a wireless network with a 128 bit WEP key (i.e. 26 characters). I now am trying to bring a MacBook onto the network. When the MacBook setup asks me for a "password," I type in the key. However, it doesn't seem to work, because the MacBook doesn't connect. The MacBook connects fine if I disable WEP encryption, but that's not something I want to do long term. Any suggestions are welcome. I know that WEP isn't the strongest encryption, but it's what I have to use now. Is the situation the same with WPA? Thanks.
  • Can't find a "delete in place" key on Macbook Pro; does it even have one?

    09/03/2006 8:48:27 PM PDT · by rudy45 · 24 replies · 578+ views
My Dell laptop has two keys. The "delete" key deletes the character that is where the cursor is. When I use this key, the cursor stays in the same place on the screen. It is therefore what I call a "delete in place" key (is there another term I should use instead?) I also have a "backspace" key. This key is a destructive backspace key. When I press it, the cursor moves backward one space and deletes whatever was there before. Our Macbook Pro has no key labeled "backspace." However, its "delete" key really is a destructive backspace key. I...
  • How can I access, from a MacBook, files on my Toshiba PC

I have a Toshiba PC and a MacBook both on the same wireless network. I want to copy files from the Toshiba onto the MacBook. I have enabled file sharing for the folder on the Toshiba. I'm looking for a Mac equivalent (if there is one) of "network neighborhood." That is, what application do I use on the MacBook that allows me to "see" the folder on the Toshiba? Thanks.

I am setting up a new MacBook Pro. As part of setup, I am being asked to connect to wireless network. The MacBook has detected the SSID of our home network. We have a DLink 614+ wireless router, which I believe is 802.11b compliant. It has WEP encryption, using a 26 character hex key. Our curren PCs connect fine. During MacBook setup, we are given a list of detected networks, and our current one's SSID appears on that list. MacBook then asks us for "password." I try putting in the 26 character key, but it isn't working. Am I doing...
  • Please confirm that MacBook [Pro] can run Mac OS and Windows XP together (?)

    07/22/2006 11:27:56 AM PDT · by rudy45 · 16 replies · 358+ views
The Apple web site makes this claim. Is anyone doing it, i.e. running Mac OS and Windows together at the same time on a Mac Book or Mac Book Pro? Therefore, if this capability exists, and we are running Windows, then we can run, on the Mac Book, and application that runs under Windows, even if there is not a native Apple corresponding application? Does the decision to run one or both operating systems have to be made at startup, or can you dynamically bring up the second operating system while the computer is running with the first one? Thanks.

"Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday posted a 48 percent jump in quarterly net income as sales of iPods and Intel Corp.-powered Macintosh computers topped expectations, sending shares [over] 8 percent higher," Duncan Martell reports for Reuters. "Apple said it shipped 1.33 million Macintosh computers in the quarter and 8.11 million iPods, increases of 12 percent and 32 percent, respectively, year over year. iPod shipments topped some analysts' estimates of as low as 7.5 million for the period," Martell reports. "Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief financial officer, said in an interview that the company had a 'fantastic quarter,' adding that its...

Apple Computer on Tuesday unveiled its much-anticipated MacBook, the company's consumer-level notebook and replacement for the iBook. The MacBook will feature the Intel Core Duo processor and a new 13-inch widescreen display. Apple says the MacBook is up to five times as fast as the iBook it replaces. The MacBook is not only replacing the iBook, but it will also replace the 12-inch PowerBook, according to Apple.

Appleinsider is reporting that Apple will be holding a "special briefing" in Manhattan, NY for analysts and members of the media. The event is reportedly scheduled for Thursday, May 18th at 10am Eastern. In the invites to the event, Apple welcomed analysts and members of the media to preview the new flagship retail location ahead of its Friday evening grand opening, but did not hint at any product introductions. May 19th is the launch day for the new 5th Avenue (New York) flagship Apple store. There has been some speculation that this event will mark the release of the new...

With the announcement of the first Intel based Macs yesterday, many users have rejoiced in being able to dual-boot both Mac OS X and Windows. Unfortunately, this is not the case; due to Apple's use of the extensible firmware interface (EFI) rather than BIOS, current Windows releases will not run on the systems. On Tuesday at Macworld, Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller said the company would not specifically block the use of Windows on Mac hardware. Instead, limitations in Windows itself will prevent its use on the new MacBook Pro laptop and iMac. With...
