So, an older relative wants a laptop so he can surf the web from his recliner. His computer skills consist of being able to turn the computer on, open his browser, and do simple word processing/printing. He's tired of viruses and malware. I've been talking up the Macbook. He's decided on the Macbook pro with 17 inch monitor, Way more computer than he needs, but he likes the big monitor because it will be easier on his eyes. All sounds good, right? The heated debate over whether Apple is tricking you into believing you can see millions of colors on your Mac has come to a quiet conclusion. My wife is trying to watch a YouTube video. Every ten seconds or so it just stops, and she has to hit the pause/play button to continue. I'm on the same network, but I have no problems with my Dell Inspiron 5100 if i watch YouTube. We're using wireless, communicating with a Dlink router. Thanks for any thoughts.

Well, my experiences of both types of laptop this week has left me reeling. Where do I start? Let’s start with the Mac, a MacBook with OSX preloaded. I have a MacBook Pro. It is wirelessly attached to a router to which are attached a Dell laptop, a Toshiba laptop and a Dell desktop. The Dell desktop runs XP home with SP2, has a Canon MP500 printer USB-attached. The Dell laptop and the Toshiba print remotely, over the wireless network, with no problem. However, I can't get the MacBook to print. When I click on system preferences, I can see the workgroup name, and the name of the Dell desktop. I have a wireless network with a 128 bit WEP key (i.e. 26 characters). I now am trying to bring a MacBook onto the network. When the MacBook setup asks me for a "password," I type in the key. However, it doesn't seem to work, because the MacBook doesn't connect. The MacBook connects fine if I disable WEP encryption, but that's not something I want to do long term. Any suggestions are welcome. I know that WEP isn't the strongest encryption, but it's what I have to use now. Is the situation the same with WPA? Thanks.

My Dell laptop has two keys. The "delete" key deletes the character that is where the cursor is. When I use this key, the cursor stays in the same place on the screen. It is therefore what I call a "delete in place" key (is there another term I should use instead?) I also have a "backspace" key. This key is a destructive backspace key. When I press it, the cursor moves backward one space and deletes whatever was there before. Our Macbook Pro has no key labeled "backspace." I have a Toshiba PC and a MacBook both on the same wireless network. I want to copy files from the Toshiba onto the MacBook. I have enabled file sharing for the folder on the Toshiba. I'm looking for a Mac equivalent (if there is one) of "network neighborhood." That is, what application do I use on the MacBook that allows me to "see" the folder on the Toshiba? Thanks.

I am setting up a new MacBook Pro. As part of setup, I am being asked to connect to wireless network. The MacBook has detected the SSID of our home network. We have a DLink 614+ wireless router, which I believe is 802.11b compliant. It has WEP encryption, using a 26 character hex key. Our curren PCs connect fine. During MacBook setup, we are given a list of detected networks, and our current one's SSID appears on that list. MacBook then asks us for "password." I try putting in the 26 character key, but it isn't working. Am I doing...

The Apple web site makes this claim. Is anyone doing it, i.e. running Mac OS and Windows together at the same time on a Mac Book or Mac Book Pro? Therefore, if this capability exists, and we are running Windows, then we can run, on the Mac Book, and application that runs under Windows, even if there is not a native Apple corresponding application? Does the decision to run one or both operating systems have to be made at startup, or can you dynamically bring up the second operating system while the computer is running with the first one? Apple Computer on Tuesday unveiled its much-anticipated MacBook, the company's consumer-level notebook and replacement for the iBook.
