I am setting up a new MacBook Pro. As part of setup, I am being asked to connect to wireless network. The MacBook has detected the SSID of our home network. We have a DLink 614+ wireless router, which I believe is 802.11b compliant. It has WEP encryption, using a 26 character hex key. Our curren PCs connect fine.
During MacBook setup, we are given a list of detected networks, and our current one's SSID appears on that list. MacBook then asks us for "password." I try putting in the 26 character key, but it isn't working.
Am I doing the right thing in putting in this key, when a "password" is requested? Is there a way I can determine the key from one of our existing PCs? Every configuration screen I've seen has it "dotted" out. I also don't want to reset the WEP key. Thanks.
try putting 0x in front of your WEP key
that is the characters zero then lowercase x - '0x'
OK, I logged into my Dlink router. As I suspected, it uses 128 bit WEP, which translates into a 26 character hex string. My Dlink screen lets me see the key in plain text, and I am positive I have entered it that way into the MacBook.
Is the MacBook truly asking for the WEP key?
See my latest post. THanks for your help. Are you suggesting that in the password field on the MacBook, that I put 0x in front of the WEP key entries? Thanks.
yes - type the characters at the very beginning of the password field followed by the WEP key so that it is one continuous string.
Ping.
