A case of mistaken identity left a Modesto man hospitalized in serious condition after a stabbing this morning in south Modesto, authorities reported. The incident happened about 6:15 a.m. in the 900 block of west Whitmore Avenue. Four men, later identified by Modesto police as Norteño gang members, kicked in the victim's door while he was sleeping. The 33-year-old victim was kicked, punched and stabbed in the upper right side of his back and had a laceration across his left eyebrow, a police spokesman said.
