Many Democrats hoped Thursday's dedication of the Clinton Presidential Center would be a joyous occasion for looking back at the party's only recent two-term president and ahead to a new Democratic administration. John Kerry's defeat changed that. Still, the celebration of Bill Clinton's presidency provides Democrats with an opportunity to recall how he rose from tiny Hope, Ark., to the White House and to absorb the lessons of his ascent for their admittedly uphill battle to regain national power. To be sure, Clinton's presidency was not a totally positive experience for either the nation or for the Democratic Party. During...

The Clinton Presidential Center and Library opens this week in Little Rock. Like him or not, we must admit that William Jefferson Clinton leaves a powerful legacy, one that vastly expands the ability of political leaders to misbehave and remain in office. One of the most embarrassing but in many ways illuminating endeavors of academics, media pundits, and certain recent inhabitants of the White House, is to focus on something called a “Presidential Legacy.” Bill Clinton spent an inordinate amount of time “building” his. Of course, most presidential legacies take years to develop and evolve. Harry Truman, for example, was...

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - As Bill Clinton's library is unveiled at a gala opening this week, one thing is certain: His messy legacy will be on full display. One alcove will be dedicated to impeachment, and organizers have promised not to sidestep even Monica Lewinsky or Paula Jones. The 58-year-old political superstar is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year to his library."Bill Clinton is a rock star," said Skip Rutherford, head of Clinton's nonprofit foundation that built the $165 million library. "He is Elvis."The William J. Clinton Presidential Center, a metaphorical "bridge to the 21st...

An Egyptian national, described by police as mentally ill, rammed his car this evening into the downtown Houston Public Library, 500 McKinney. The man, Amin Hamby, 33, told Houston police officers he had lapsed on his medication. Hamby was arrested and authorities are filing state criminal mischief charges against him, said Sgt. Michelle Sandoval, a Houston Police Department spokesman. Hamby will ultimately be turned over to immigration authorities for deportation, she added. Library crewmen this evening were cleaning up broken glass, but no other damage was apparent. There were no injuries reported.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Origami-like chandeliers hang from a 40-foot ceiling illuminating a massive reception hall. Drawn gold drapes part to reveal a full-size replica of the Oval Office. Two weeks before the Clinton Presidential Library is unveiled, it's enough to make dyed-in-the-wool Democrats forget about Tuesday's presidential result. "I tell people, my presidential election is in 15 days," said Skip Rutherford, the head of Bill Clinton's private foundation, during a preview Wednesday of the nearly finished Clinton Center. A crowd of 30,000 donors, reporters, celebrities and international dignitaries are expected to descend on the 30-acre presidential park for the...

Yesterday I had the good usual weekly talk with my mother over the phone. She lives in Labelle, Florida, not too far east of Ft. Myers. She had just finished her 6 hr all-volunteer phone drive to help get President Bush re-elected. It went pretty well. She then proceeded to tell me that a few days earlier she tried to view some of my postings that had gotten on the Blogs for Bush website at the local Labelle public library's computer. You'd only have 30 minutes to log on if other people are wanting to use the computer. The first...

Fahrenheit 9/11" turned out to be a little too hot for the Wauconda Area Public Library District. Originally scheduled to show liberal moviemaker Michael Moore's controversial flick Oct. 28, the library no longer will offer the free screening. Library Director Thomas Kern said Friday the controversy that arose over the planned showing of "Fahrenheit 9/11" - because of its proximity to Election Day - wasn't worth fighting anymore. Kern said there was no reason to waste tax dollars by having library employees devote additional time and energy to a one-night showing. The single showing of the movie was going to...
