Russia and China Ink Deal for Massive New Gas Pipeline

Russia’s gas giant Gazprom on Tuesday signed an agreement with China’s state energy firm CNPC to build a second huge natural gas pipeline from Russia to China, Gazprom’s CEO Alexey Miller said.

Russia bets on selling increased volumes of energy products to China after losing Europe as a key oil and gas export market following Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Gazprom and CNPC signed today a “legally binding memorandum” on the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline from Russia to China via Mongolia, Russian media quoted Miller as telling reporters in Beijing.

Power of Siberia 2 has been a topic of discussions between Russia and China for years but no progress has been made so far.

Currently, Russia supplies pipeline gas to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline, one of the biggest projects recently completed by Gazprom and the first conduit for Russian gas to China.

The Power of Siberia 2 pipeline is designed to ship gas from Russia’s Western Siberia Altai region to northeast China via Mongolia.

An agreement on the Power of Siberia 2 has been elusive due to some sticking points, including the price at which Gazprom will deliver the gas.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The memorandum signed on Tuesday doesn’t include details and issues such as prices or capacity commitments, so the key sticking points remain.

“It should be understood that the project of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline construction and the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline construction, the transit gas pipeline via Mongolia and related gas transport facilities in China, it will now be the largest, having the greatest scale and the most capital-intensive project in the gas industry globally,” Russian news agencies quoted Miller as saying on Tuesday.

Russia touted the project as the biggest ever in the global gas industry, while China has yet to confirm the deal, which is light on details.

Miller himself acknowledged that Russia and China have yet to discuss issues related to financing and the price of supply.

I’m not sure why anyone expected different after sanctioning them for selling directly to the west. Russia was also a huge auto market... guess who has picked up that slack lol

Each of these huge pipelines from Russia to China is a strategic disaster for the United States brought to you courtesy of the Deep State warmongers and the Biden Administration. Each of these greatly reduces the potential effectiveness of any naval blockade we could impose on China in the event of a conflict with the Chicoms.

"But but but they would have done it anyway" sniffle the Neocons? Bullcrap. They hadn't done it already despite Russia being a massive oil and gas producer for years. That oil and gas previously went to Europe. There was no incentive to invest in the infrastructure needed to deliver it to China and it would've taken years to build that anyway. Well now one of them is built and another is on the way. Oh, and European countries are suffering massive economic losses due to much more expensive energy. Great job all around guys. Look what you've achieved here. Morons.

B.S.

And pipelines are easily taken out and just as vulnerable as tankers at sea, if not more so.

Your denial is BS. Those pipelines will be in Russia and in China. That will be harder to reach/strike than it would be to impose a naval blockade in say, the Indian Ocean well away from China and well outside their missile range. That would force China's Navy to try to project power thousands of miles from their home ports. That's in shambles now that China will be getting a lot of energy from Russia.

The proud result of US policy [/s] with which DJT now gets to wear on his sleeve with his failed diplomacy, but almost the entirety of the fault lies with the xiden cabal, dems and those rino supporters (including some FReepers).

US policy is cementing the news axis, and the consequences will be disastrous.

This is not just about China and Russian oil distrubition. This is going to run all the way to Eastern Europe.

Part of the calculation for disruption in Ukraine was to end the flow and dependence for oil in EUropean countries.

Trumps Trade War will become a shooting war to stop these “outside the USD Trade” initiatives. Everywhere that China and Russia are trying to put pipes are being targeted by Trump right now in a series of negotiations or Coups.

America is going to either going to defeat Russia and China (now India too) or we will never have peace. We have defeated the EU using Ukriane.

America can either live peacefully and share the wealth of the world or we can be at war forever. The USN controls the sea and can inderdict all seaborne trade routes; however, we are losing the war against the Belts and Roads Initiative.

Our handling of Russia using Swift, Trade, Sanctions, Seizures of Assets/Stealing of Assets, has been on full display to the non-aligned and global south countries, hence their applications for Brics membership. The US Coup Industry abroad and even here at home is something that even Trump is dealing with domestically - complicated politics to the say the least. That we meddle illegally in other nations is a show of US influence; at home it is the DNC and cities with riots.

This Shanghai Security Organization and the Brics is turning out to be on steroids now. The world has watched in horror at how the West with its financial and trade system keeps everyone in line.

Most the world sees the root cause of the Ukraine conflict as one where the US staged a coup and installed a hyper hostile regime to Russia arming it and enticing them with NATO....

Expecting the world who sees the conduct of the US since the fall of the Soviet Union to continue to be divided and conquered is becoming a nightmare for Washington and Brussels.

Knocking EUrope out of being an economic competitor severely weakened the US ability to project a coaliation of the willing power as has been done since Clinton’s presidency.

Trump will go to war. The World is going to be in terrible turm-OIL as American tries to retain the Status Quo, and as we have to learn to live with others - American will never be an Equal but the mighy eventually fall. Obama started the fall of America with condrictions of friendship abroad. Today the US is going to simply have to settle for being a Great Power with a Sphere of Influence. To continue to rule the world as like to think we have tried to do, is to fight wars everywhere to get our way.

Trump still has the Coup Card. The world does not see the US as a force for Good - our own internal politics has bleed into international politics and we have been “bad” in a world waking up our Never Ending Wars. Trade Wars before World Wars....

The Power of Siberia 2 natural gas pipeline had been in the planning phase for many years, before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine put the project on hold.

The original plan was for it to commence operation in 2030, but that likely will slip, due to the war delay.

If there is no agreement on the financials (price, quantity), it seems unlikely that there is a firm commitment to invest a fixed amount for construction - which has been the big obstacle to this project. More than 1,000 miles of unstable tundra, where no road yet exists, requires a huge investment upfront. Neither Russia nor China have previously been willing to pay that huge bill upfront, so many years before potential payback.

Sounds like this might be more of a “Letter of Intent” for the news cycle, rather than a real contract.

Are any of the Russian pipelines running north to south?

Last I looked they were East to West.
