The Red Finn responsible for this case is an Italian citizen of Finnish prominence who is decidedly interconnected with influences beyond the Pale. The Italian government has appealed a ruling from the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg that would remove crucifixes from Italian public schools. The government made its appeal today before the Grand Chamber of the Court, in a case that the Vatican and many European nations will be watching closely. Ten other countries signed on to show their support for Italy in the case, several of them Orthodox strongholds, including Greece, Russia and Cyprus.

Arguably the nastiest thing that happens to law students -- other than making them into lawyers -- is teaching them that law is simply politics by other means. You don't have to subscribe to the (blatantly obvious) position that Roe v. Wade, for example, no matter your politics, was an exercise in raw judicial politics; and once you see how that sausage is made, it is terribly difficult to look at any judicial decision of the twentieth century and see a process any different than a legislative accomplishment. Teaching law students this is very bad for two reasons: First, it...

Bush's election victory. How wrong for unelected judges to be imposing themselves on the popular will! they have cried. Ironically, the Left has for years been relying on courts to accomplish what it could not achieve in the voting booth. To take just one instance among thousands, when the New Jersey state legislature passed a law against taxpayer-financed abortions a few years...

February 27, 2004, 9:20 a.m. No Boy Scouts The ACLU defends NAMBLA by Deroy Murdock (1,287 words) NEW YORK - An old friend of mine once said this about the American Civil Liberties Union: "They're a bunch of whale-saving, criminal-loving pinkos - and thank God for them." This remark nicely summarizes the ambivalence with which many people regard the ACLU. Few organizations dance closer to the very edge of the loony-Left precipice than it does. There seems to be no thug too hardened nor any cause too exotic for the ACLU to champion. At the same time, if America ever...
