One day after recommending a five-and-a-half month suspension for an officer's involvement in a fatal shooting earlier this year, Portland Police Chief Mark announced his resignation from the bureau. Kroeker said he would step down October 17. Kroeker said he hand-delivered a resignation letter to Portland Mayor Vera Katz less than an hour before delivering the news to residents of the city. "In this letter, I explain that I am resigning, it's official," said Kroeker. "I also explained I'm resigning because this resignation was requested of me through some intermediaries and I believe it would have been better had we...

LAPD has arrested 200 terror-related suspects By Mariel Garza Staff Writer Los Angeles police have detained about 200 people believed to have connections to foreign terrorists, Police Chief William Bratton said Wednesday during a morning call-in radio program. Bratton characterized those arrested as a "variety of individuals we feel have some connection to issues of terrorism." He said the arrests were made in conjunction with federal agents and it is unclear whether they will face terrorism-related charges. "Our philosophy is get them before they get us," Bratton said. "So if I can get them on an immigration violation, anything, we're...

The Hollywood Resistance Force was out in strength today Sunday, March 23, 2003. Along with around three to five hundred other conservatives, the Los Angeles Chapter of the Free Republic Network made sure Michael Moore (or less) had to pass by fourteen hundred United States flags on the way in to receive his Oscar. Every leftist who sputtered nonsense from the podium, had to pass us by. We waved our flags and shouted Liberate Iraq, Free the Iraqis, L - A - P - D (a supportive chant for the Los Angeles Police Department officers on site) and other phrases...

LOS ANGELES(AP) - A proposal by Police Chief William Bratton to ban a majority of police pursuits will be considered by the Police Commission on Tuesday. The policy prohibits officers from chasing people if they have committed infractions such as missing license plates, broken taillights or other minor traffic violations. A Police Commission review has found that at least 60 percent of all pursuits involving Los Angeles police officers are for minor traffic offenses. Bratton's proposal also requires greater supervision of chases in progress. The plan comes after a series of high-profile chases and collisions, including a Dec. 3 accident...

Alarm Plan: Police May Quit Reacting 2nd title in paper: Will Police Turn Deaf Ear to Alarms? By Mariel Garza Staff Writer Friday, December 13, 2002 - Los Angeles police officers would ignore most private residential and business burglar alarms under a plan to be considered Tuesday -- a policy many say would put Angelenos at risk of being victimized. The Police Commission is set to adopt a policy to halt automatic police response to most alarm calls unless a human being verifies that there is evidence of a break-in. The Los Angeles Police Department responds to about 136,000...

Curious things are happening here in the City of Angels. At police stations all over town, and at the downtown police headquarters building, once-reclusive captains are emerging from their offices to attend roll calls, hang out in detective squad rooms, and otherwise mingle with the troops. "Hey," they say, "how about this Bratton guy?" "Yes," we say, "how about him?"These captains, like the guards in a P.O.W. camp, look to the far horizon and see the liberators approaching. When the tables are at last turned and the gates are smashed open, they most ardently wish for us to report...

White smoke finally appeared over Los Angeles City Hall on Wednesday. At long last, habemus chiefam. Mayor James Hahn has chosen William Bratton to be the next chief of the LAPD, picking the former NYPD commissioner over the two other remaining candidates for the post, former Philadelphia police commissioner John Timoney and Oxnard, California police chief Art Lopez. The selection will be formally announced at a Thursday press conference, but, foreshadowing the reception Bratton can expect from some quarters, the carping has already begun. "[T]he Latino community overall is very disappointed," said city councilman Nick Pacheco, who had been lobbying...

<p>CNN) -- City officials Friday asked the Los Angeles Police Department to investigate whether Cardinal Roger Mahony and others within the archdiocese may have violated criminal laws by failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse.</p>
<p>"I encourage you as the new chief of the Los Angeles Police Department to investigate these allegations ... so that we can determine if prosecutions are warranted," said Los Angeles City Attorney Rockard Delgadillo in a letter to Chief Martin Pomeroy, who took over as acting chief following the resignation of Bernard Parks last month.</p>
