Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano a Big Polluter By PETER SERAFIN VOLCANO, Hawaii - Kilauea volcano, one of Hawaii's most popular tourist attractions, is also by far the state's worst air polluter. Researchers now are trying to determine if that also makes it one of the state's biggest health risks. Since it began erupting on Jan. 3, 1983, the volcano has been sending an average of 1,000 metric tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere each day, according to the Hawaii chapter of the American Lung Association. This is 6,000 times the amount emitted by a major industrial polluter on the mainland,...

Today's theme is people in isolation. I found this picture of the Pu'u O'o vent field on Kilauea strangely compelling (click for large size): Possible caption: "OK, I know I lost my glasses around here somewhere..." Vatnajokull Ice Cap (Iceland) from the road; click for full-size: Possible caption: "No outlet."

I haven't posted Kilauea volcano pictures for a little while, but the eruption just keeps on going and going. It had been sending lava onto the coastal flats, so there hadn't been any recent ocean entries, but a fairly large flow called the 'Banana' flow reached the ocean yesterday. I've posted two nice pictures, but for fans of molten lava, there are a lot of new ones on the linked site above.

Click on this image to see the larger version. I'm not posting this because it's the best I've ever seen of the Kilauea eruption, but because in the midst of the unusual activity at Stromboli, I didn't note that January 3, 2003 is the 20th anniversary of the Pu'u O'o eruption of Kilauea. It's interesting to note that although shield volcanoes like Hawaii must build up by long-term ongoing activity like this eruption, this is the longest sustained activity ever observed (in the modern historical era) at Kilauea. And it could just keep going and going and going...
