Geology Pictures of the Week, May 30-June 5, 2004: Kilauea Returns to the Sea
Hawaii Volcano Observatory Kilauea Eruption Update ^ | May 31, 2004 | USGS

I haven't posted Kilauea volcano pictures for a little while, but the eruption just keeps on going and going. It had been sending lava onto the coastal flats, so there hadn't been any recent ocean entries, but a fairly large flow called the 'Banana' flow reached the ocean yesterday. I've posted two nice pictures, but for fans of molten lava, there are a lot of new ones on the linked site above.

I love the smell of sulfur in the morning. It smells like... a volcano!

One note: even though my first comment says morning, the bottom picture is a sunset.

Thanks for the link. My daughter and I were there some years ago. she had just gotten her BS in geology.

WAY Cool! I love volcanoe pics,

Here's a close up of a small "toe flow" that I found most interesting.

We were just here over the weekend and saw lava, although none going into the sea this time.

Based on this map. I’d say your first comment about a morning shot was correct.

I went back and read the page... it was a sunrise (which the map indicates it HAD to be). Thanks for setting me correct, I don't know why I suddenly decided it was sunset.

As a present, here's a new shot of the Banana ocean entry (medium size); go to the linked site for more. Note photographer for scale.
