THE Pope yesterday named a resident Scottish cardinal for only the third time since the Reformation when he appointed the Most Rev Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, as one of 31 new "princes" of the Roman Catholic Church. The honour for Archbishop O’Brien means he joins the "cardinal electors" who will name a successor after the current Pope’s death.
