WASHINGTON:The US should forge closer counter-terrorism ties with India to respond to threats posed by al-Qaeda and other terrorist cells operating from countries like Pakistan and Yemen, a key Republican presidential hopeful has said. Calling for a reassessment of America's relationship with Pakistan, Jon Huntsman, a former ambassador to China under the Obama administration, said "certain realities" with Pakistan had to be recognised. "This is not a relationship based on shared values," he said in a speech at Southern New Hampshire University. "It is transactional at best," former governor of Utah was quoted as saying by the leading Congressional paper,...

In any national election we can depend on the usual liberal ad hominem attacks on Republicans and their candidates. One chestnut already appearing is the charge that Republicans comprise the "anti-science party," as even a Republican, presidential primary candidate Jon Huntsman, fretted recently. Huntsman's angst arose over doubts expressed by some other candidates, particularly Texas governor Rick Perry, that human-caused climate change is an established scientific fact, as New York Times columnist Paul Krugmanbelieves: "The scientific consensus about man-made global warming - which includes 97 percent to 98 percent of researchers in the field, according to the National Academy of...

The public affairs department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently noted an uptick in the media's use of the word cult to describe Mormonism, even in august publications such as the New York Times and the Economist. It is probably not coincidental that two Mormons, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman, are running for president. The peculiar place of Mormonism in American culture was made even more evident in a comment by Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt. Speaking in July with two other commentators about the presidential chances of Texas governor Rick Perry, she said she expected...

According to the survey, which was released Monday, 28 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say they support Perry as their party's presidential nominee, with Romney at 21 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is at ten percent, with Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third bid for the White House, former Godfather's Pizza CEO and radio talk show host Herman Cain, and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, all at seven percent. The poll indicates that Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is at four percent, with former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at three...

Washington, DC (CNN) - While it continues to build up staff and resources in New Hampshire, CNN has learned that Jon Huntsman's GOP presidential campaign has also released some low-level staffers. A Republican source in the Granite State tells CNN that the Huntsman campaign laid off three junior-level workers early last week. A campaign spokesman would not comment on whether any staffers had been let go, but did point out that two campaign officials are being moved from Florida to New Hampshire. While he's struggled to gain traction in national polls, the former Utah governor and former U.S. ambassador to...

Mike Huckabee‘s faith made up a significant part of his political identity during his 2008 Republican Presidential bid, and as such Huckabee came out this morning to defend the open airing of faith by other Republican candidates this time around. Speaking to the Fox & Friends crew this morning, Huckabee said he appreciated Texas Gov. Rick Perry‘s openness with his faith, but didn’t see it as a way of “other”-ing the Mormon candidates in the field, Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. “I want to know what a candidate believes,” Huckabee explained, arguing that electing a religious candidate is not the...

Bill Clinton Praises Two GOP Candidates GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman received some unsolicited praise from a former president today, though it might not be from the one they were hoping for. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, former President Bill Clinton lauded the two former governors for addressing climate change on the stump. When Blitzer asked Clinton to list the candidates he liked and the ones he was concerned about, the former president said: ” Well, it appears that Gov. Huntsman and Gov. Romney, at least, have not come out in just flat out denial...

From the department of unhelpful praise, former President Jimmy Carter tells Rachel Maddow he's a-ok with the idea of Mitt Romney as the GOP presidential nominee..... But this isn't the first time Carter has given generous quotes about one of Obama's challengers. Back in May, he said in a CNN interview that Jon Huntsman was "very attractive to me personally" as a White House contender.

Appearing on Tony Kornheiser’s ESPN radio show Wednesday, NBC News’ Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd predicted that if Rick Perry wins the Republican nomination, a “semi-credible independent candidate” would emerge. “If Perry’s the nominee,” Todd told Kornheiser, “I think there’s going to be be a serious effort of some sort of moderate Republican linking up with a conservative Democrat of trying to run in some sort of like, ‘let’s throw all the bums out — let’s crash the party,’ you know, a la [Ross] Perot …”

Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman will announce the endorsement of former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Gov. Tom Ridge Friday in an event at St. Anselm College in Goffstown. Ridge, a former governor of Pennsylvania, plans to attend a press conference with Huntsman at the college’s New Hampshire Institute for Politics. In a statement by the Huntsman campaign, Ridge said Thursday that Huntsman is “a serious, insightful leader.” Huntsman, 51, a former Utah governor and ambassador to China, said he’ll be counting on Ridge for help and counsel.

Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman's presidential campaigns both issued statements late Thursday responding to The Cable's interview with a senior foreign policy advisor for Rick Perry, in which the advisor clarified Perry's stance on U.S. policy toward Afghanistan. "[Perry] would lean toward wanting to bring our troops home, but he understands that we have vital strategic interests in Afghanistan and that a precipitous withdrawal is not what he's recommending," the advisor said. "He has a clear sense of the mission and wanting to win it, but not just by throwing the kitchen sink at it." In an e-mail titled, "Rick's...

“I’m not taking a position, but I would be very pleased to see him win the Republican nomination,” Carter said on an interview on MSNBC set to air Thursday night. Carter also said he appreciated that Rep. Bachmann (R-Minn.) worked on Carter’s presidential campaign in 1976. Bachmann has mentioned how she was a Democrat during college but switched parties after because she disagreed with certain foreign and domestic policies of the left. “I know, and I appreciate that she helped me out!,” Carter said. Carter expressed confidence that Obama would be reelected. … Back in May, he also had high...

The behavior by some members of the audience at the most recent Republican presidential debates has at least one campaign staffer concerned about the future of the GOP. Sarah Reidy, the national director of scheduling for Jon Huntsman's presidential campaign, had some stern words for her own party after the audience at a debate in California applauded the number of executions during Texas Gov. Rick Perry's tenure, and then some in the crowd at a debate in Florida cheered when the moderator asked if a sick person without insurance should be left to die. In a post on her Facebook...

Hi Freepers, having watched last nights debate, I have come away with a little bit more information on each of the candidates, and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their thoughts and impressions about how each of the candidates did. I will be looking through the live thread further (there are thousands of comments), but mostly I am looking for a few specific things, if anyone would be willing to oblige: 1) Were there any "Deal Breakers" or any positions which were taken that would keep you from endorsing a candidate at this stage in the...

When eight Republican presidential candidates gathered to debate in Tampa Monday night, a ninth hopeful, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, was at his home in Santa Fe. The cast of the Florida debate ranged from the front-runner, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, to former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who sometimes registers just 1 percent support in the polls. But since Johnson has also received 1 or even 2 percent support in some polls, he couldn't help wondering: Why are they on stage, and I'm at home? "It's terribly, terribly frustrating," Johnson told me by phone from New Mexico. "Without pointing...

"When you make comments that fly in the face of 98 out of 100 climate scientists, to call into question the science of evolution, all I am saying is that in order for the Republican Party to win, we can't run from science," Huntsman said. "By making comments that basically don't reflect the reality of the situation, we turn people off." Politico's John Harris, a debate moderator, pressed Texas Gov. Rick Perry to name the scientists that he refers to on the campaign trail as credibly refuting the international consensus that humans are contributing to global warming.
