MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. (Nov. 17, 2005) -- With only six weeks until Christmas, many people have started their holiday shopping. However, not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on presents. The program, which was started in 1989 by the Personal Readiness and Community Services Center here, is designed to support readiness and enhance the morale of the leathernecks and sailors on base during...

I recently received this email from GOP counties.org Fellow Patriots, The Democrat-dominated Sacramento City Council has crossed the line. At a time when we have men and women of the U.S. military fighting in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Sacramento City Council has issued a resolution condemning the war against terrorism in Iraq. Here was their "after-action" report:http://sacramentofordemocracy.org/?q=node/view/3340 Since the Sacramento City Council is paid by the taxpayers, works for the taxpayers, and is supposed to represent the taxpayers, it's time that WE THE TAXPAYERS let them know what we think. How do we do this? The email continues… 1) Call...

AR RAMADI, Iraq (Nov. 2, 2005) -- Over 200,000 Iraqi people in Al Anbar Province recently made their way to polling sites for Iraq’s Constitutional Referendum. The voters safely made their voices heard without even seeing the forces that were instrumental in making it possible. In response to a request from the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq and the Ministry of Interior, the 2nd Marine Division deployed several election support elements comprised of Marines, Sailors and Soldiers throughout the province. These teams provided behind-the-scenes logistics support and ensured poll workers and material moved unimpeded between polling sites. According to the...

Hi, all, I'm posting here because I know that this place is the one place to get good advice in a hurry. I called on you all recently when my Chrysler Minivan wouldn't start. Long story--but once again, Freepers came through. So now.. My husband is totally stressed. He has a MAJOR job interview tomorrow. He doesn't expect to get the job (there's already someone there and in the Cdn. government sometimes you have to re-apply for your job). However, tomorrow is part one of the interview. There will be actors bringing him problems and he has to basically demonstrate...

GULFPORT, Mississippi, Nov. 1, 2005 - Through the efforts of Operation Homelink, personnel stationed at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, were able to receive 100 free, refurbished computers. The PCs, which are valued at more than $30,000, were given away during a four-hour period Oct. 28 to military families impacted by Hurricane Katrina, particularly those who have a service member preparing to deploy overseas. “This is an outstanding opportunity for our troops who suffered loss,” said Cmdr. Rodney Duggins, supply officer at the Seabee base. Northrop Grumman, one of the government’s largest providers of information technology systems and services, donated...

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - America's growing appetite for exotic sushi may help preserve vanishing beds of seaweed seen as an important part of the ecosystem along the California coastline. Diners in sushi restaurants are eating ever greater amounts of sea urchin roe, known as Uni, creating a $23 million industry in California for harvesting the creatures, the California Sea Urchin Commission said this week. The spiny echinoderms, a potential peril to swimmers stepping on rocks, feast on kelp, which is dwindling along California's coastline. Divers in the state now harvest 800,000 pounds of Uni annually, the Sea Urchin Commission said,...

CAMP VICTORY, Iraq — A call for help is being answered. But this time, instead of sending in the Marines, it is the Leathernecks who are seeking the help of the 69th Signal Company’s cable dogs. A group of soldiers from the unit’s 1st Platoon, who will help put in a 40 miles fiber ring at an undisclosed Marine headquarters in this war-torn nation, left late Monday night on the assignment. When the job is done, Sgt. 1st Class Bobby Brown said it would not surprise him if 70 miles of communication cables of all types are installed. Since the...

Ginseng can help keep you clear of colds, say scientists By Nic Fleming, Science Correspondent (Filed: 25/10/2005) People who take ginseng suffer substantially fewer colds, research published yesterday showed. Only one in 10 of those given daily doses of North American ginseng root extract suffered two or more colds during four months including winter, compared with almost a quarter of those taking placebos. While a range of health benefits have been claimed for the herb, including combating flu and colds, many previous attempts to test such claims scientifically have been of poor quality. Publication of the research in the Canadian...

Ladies and Gentlemen and legal-minded Freepers, I need your help: One of my friends has a local radio show (which I've previously chronicled) devoted to hunting and fishing. Recently, he secured the Republican candidate for county executive as a guest on the show, to talk about his thoughts and opinions on hunting and fishing. My friend has spent some time and money promoting the interview thus far. Unfortunately, recently the radio station has intervened and put a stop to the interview, saying that they would have legal problems on their hands if they let it continue, problems going back to...

My friend recently moved from Texas to California. Two weeks ago, he was arrested for a crime he didn't commit. His mother sent me an email describing the situation. It reads, in part: Sunday morning, October 8th at 10:30a.m., Steve (not his real name) was sitting in his truck in front of his apartment talking on his cell phone. Two men approached him and said that he had exposed himself to their daughters. Both Steve and one of the men called 911. The police came, handcuffed Steve and took him to jail. His truck was impounded. He sat in jail...

10/19/2005 - BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan -- Airmen and Soldiers joined forces at a former Soviet munitions dump near here to transport and destroy three 5,000-pound rockets. If not destroyed, the rockets could have posed a threat to U.S. and coalition forces serving here as part of the ongoing global war on terrorism, officials said. Lessons learned from the joint operation will help validate explosive ordnance disposal procedures and improve information available to EOD technicians throughout the Department of Defense. “After more than two months of planning, we teamed up with the Army EOD, vehicle maintenance and ammo Soldiers to...

10/19/2005 - ALI BASE, Iraq -- The sky above Balad Air Base was thick with dust and sand when four F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots completed another mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They were headed to their deployed home at Balad Oct. 17 when they were eventually diverted here. Their mission started early that morning, but it was well past lunch when they traveled in a holding pattern above a dusty Balad. The four F-16 pilots, from the 332nd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, had aerial refueled and were waiting for the sandstorm to pass. But weather forecasters determined the storm...
