West Coast ports negotiators reach settlement 2/21/2015, 11:48:58 AM · by Citizen Zed San Jose Mercury News ^ | 2-20-2015 | Pete Carey GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A group of Guatemalan musicians is on a mission to breathe life into a pre-Columbian language and heritage through a thoroughly modern genre: hip-hop. Calling themselves Balam Ajpu, which means Jaguar Warrior or Warrior of Light, they rap in the ancient Mayan Tz'utujil language with the goal of making it cool for kids and teaching them their ancestors' stories and ways. Their debut album, "Tribute to the 20 Nawuales," or spirits, is set...

Sen. Joe Donnelly, Democrat Indiana, described what his position is as a senator"I am the hired help, and my top priority continues to be addressing the issues most important to Hoosiers: working to strengthen the economy for working- and middle-class families, ensuring our servicemembers and veterans have access to the care and resources they deserve, and providing excellent constituent services to every Hoosier.

The old 5000 watt Kohler has bit the dust. Looking to buy a new portable electric generator. There are dozens on the market and would like FReeper recommendations for one in the 5000-7500 watt range. Also considering going with a propane fired model. Any suggestions? I see a lot of Generac units at a decent price, comments about those?

The trouble at home started when, as a teenager, he began questioning the beliefs and actions of his parents, both ardent Hamas supporters. “I ended up having a big fight with them, and ran to Israel,” the youth told The Times of Israel in a phone conversation Monday from Edmonton, Canada, where he eventually sought political asylum. A tragic experience in an Israeli prison cell that night sparked a chain of events which would turn the teenager’s belief system on its head, leading him to convert to Christianity and change his name to John Calvin, after the 16th century French...

I am asking all FReepers for their help. Due to health issues I have foolishly allowed myself to fall behind on current events (as some of my recent posts may have indicated). I am not really all that tech- or internet-savvy. I have seen many web-sites listed as sources for the many threads here. Are there any other sites where information about all things politics and current affairs is available? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

"With or without help from Congress, I'm not done making real change for the American people," the president wrote in a new email, just three days after a similar email from the Democratic National Committee.

For the first time in ages, I am refurbing an arcade machine. I have done nine of them, but it has been a while. Anyway, I use an old Win98 PC to emulate arcade games in the old case, and I have forgotten if this can be done...I am trying to idiot proof the machine so after I get it set up, people won't be messing with the OS. I would like to remove the My Computer and Recycle Bin icons from the desktop in Win98. Worst case, I could edit a blank Icon and rename them with blanks, but...

On Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee regarding the need to provide Ukraine with economic assistance during its transition from the government of deposed President Viktor Yanukovich. The aid bill has encountered resistance from House and Senate Republicans, particularly a provision to provide aid to the International Monetary Fund which would utilize funds already allocated to the U.S. military.

For the poorest Floridians who rely on Medicaid for their health care, some big changes are coming in the new year that could affect whether they still qualify. Others who currently don't get Medicaid may find that the new rules allow them to sign up. The changes are all part of the Affordable Care Act and affect residents too poor to get a tax break on premiums through the health-care exchange. So whether you apply this year or next could make a big difference. "If you qualify now but won't under the new guidelines, sign up before Jan. 1," said...

RICHMOND -- A San Francisco-based group of financiers called Mortgage Resolution Partners has been calling on Sacramento and other California cities for more than a year, pitching a plan to use government powers of eminent domain to seize underwater mortgages and refinance them for the benefit of homeowners who owe more than their homes are worth. Most communities took a pass, saying the novel plan was too risky. Not Richmond, a largely working-class city in the Bay Area. There, a determined and articulate Green Party mayor has helped steer the plan through the City Council in recent months. Today, the...

Help! Somehow the task bar jumped to the top of the computer screen. Yes, I'm logged in. Yes, I know how to move the task bar around - right click, unlock task bar and move it. Problem is when I move it back to the bottom, it leaves an empty space where it was at the top and is ghosty when it's back at the bottom (the background shows through it). So, I clicked it back to the top and back down again and now the second problem... the internet screen is getting smaller and smaller. Each time I move...

At almost 4 months of age, little Brooks Dillard has spent more than half his short life in the hospital. For the last 8 weeks (as of 8/16/13), he has been at Seattle Children's Hospital. He has been on a ventilator the entire time, has had two major surgeries with another one in his near future. Brooks was born with a very rare congenital heart defect called Double Aortic Arch. Normally, the aorta leaves the heart and branches off to supply the arteries going to the arms and head. One of these branches then turns down to supply the lower...

A friend of mine needs some advice. His mother-in-law is moving to his small hometown where he lives with his wife and children. She says she's moving there (from 300 miles away) because it's too expensive where she is and she wants to get to know her grandchildren better. In fact she's never really shown much interest in her grandchildren. She currently lives close to her other children but has had difficulty getting along with her sons-in-law and their families and even with her own daughters. He's worried that it will be a repeat of the difficult situation she has...

The woman’s eyes stared vacantly into the sky. The runners had been bounding in, beaming with relief. On both sides of Boylston Street, hundreds of spectators still had packed the area, many cheering with hoarse voices for the late finishers surging in, scores of them every minute. An elderly volunteer greeting runners kept repeating this mantra: “You’re all winners.” When the first boom shattered the bliss and the haze of white smoke washed over the finish line, I could see in the eyes of the woman what had happened. She wasn’t breathing. She wasn’t moving. Her eyes appeared lifeless as...
