CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Enquirer endorsed Republican Jean Schmidt Sunday to fill former Rep. Rob Portman's seat in the 2nd Congressional District, saying she understands the district's needs and is better able to help meet them than her opponent. Schmidt will face Democrat Paul Hackett Tuesday in a special election to replace Portman, who left to become U.S. trade representative. Schmidt, a lifelong resident of Clermont County and a former state representative, knows how to make deals and has offered specific examples of projects and programs that would help the seven-county southern Ohio district, the newspaper said. The newspaper praised...

Hackett on attack in race He sets sights on Schmidt By Barry M. Horstman Post staff reporter When a Democratic Congressional Unity Breakfast can be handled quite easily at a table for three at a downtown Cincinnati restaurant, Paul Hackett needs look no further for evidence of just how uphill his campaign in the 2nd Congressional District will be this summer. Looking for something, anything to draw attention to the special Aug. 2 general election to replace former Rep. Rob Portman, Hackett met Thursday morning with two of the five candidates he defeated in last week's Democratic primary. The other...

Hackett is two faced, he attacks bush calling him a chicken hawk, sob, and the biggest threat facing america even greater than al queda then uses his image in a campaign commercial. I have seen republicans being duped by this guy. He is a personal injury frivolous trial lawyer in the mold of John Edwards. His lawsuits even put John Edwards to shame. Just because he is for gun rights doesn't mean he is a conservative dem. Quite the contrary he is a tax hiking trial lawyer that is also for gay marraige and against any abortion restrictions. He is...

It's a fight to the finish to represent the Second District in Congress. In just three days voters in Ohio's Second Congressional District will choose a replacement for Rob Portman, who was recently appointed a US trade representative by the Bush administration. Both Republican Jean Schmidt and Democrat Paul Hackett were out in force Saturday, shaking hands hoping to get some last minute exposure before Tuesday. Whether on TV or even just driving around the Tri-state, it's hard to avoid mention of Tuesday's special election. The congressional race between Hackett and Schmidt is even getting the attention of the national...

Dogfight in Ohio A Marine who fought in Fallujah is trying to become the first Iraq war vet to serve in Congress -- and give Democrats hope that Ohio is not permanently lost. Paul Hackett remembers being in Kuwait, waiting to be shipped home after a seven-month tour of duty in Ramadi and Fallujah, watching CNN America with his fellow Marines. What he saw enraged him. "All I saw on TV was Terri Schiavo," he says. "The federal government and the Florida state government came screeching to a halt to intervene into the private lives of this family during this...

WEST UNION – The political rhetoric continued to fly during a congressional debate held at the Ohio Valley Vocational School near West Union on Tuesday, July 26. Democrat Paul Hackett continued to label Republican Jean Schmidt as a "rubber stamp" career politician, while he relies much on his military service in Iraq to win the congressional election on Aug. 2. Schmidt reiterated her experience as a politician, her pro-life views on abortion and a comprehensive energy policy to win the seat in congress.

A new press release from the Ohio Repubican Party regarding Paul Hackett. (Columbus) – Ohio Republican Party Chairman Bob Bennett called on the Democratic candidate in Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District special election to immediately remove a misleading television ad that falsely implies the endorsement of President Bush. “Just a few weeks ago, Paul Hackett was calling President Bush the biggest threat to America,” Bennett said. “Now he’s trying to pull a fast one on the voters by linking himself to the President and exploiting the President’s popularity in the 2nd District. This ad is a blatant attempt to dupe voters...

CINCINNATI, July 22 - In the Second Congressional District of Ohio, which Republicans have controlled for the last two decades, the quickest route to political oblivion could be the one chosen by Paul L. Hackett: calling President Bush a "chicken hawk" for not serving in Vietnam and harshly criticizing the decision to invade Iraq. But Mr. Hackett, the Democratic candidate in the Aug. 2 special Congressional election, is not an ordinary politician. Until four months ago, he was serving in the Marines, commanding a civil affairs unit in Iraq. If Mr. Hackett is elected, he will become the first member...

I tuned in as local radio talker Bill (Willie) Cunningham, who supported Schmidt in the GOP primary interviewed Schmidt and Hackett separately for 9 minutes each in the 1PM hour Wednesday afternoon. Comments (in italics) only relate to how the interview was conducted. Schmidt - Won’t raise taxes. - Waffled on Social Security a bit. (but Cunningham IMO wasn’t fair on the SocSec questions and was interrupting) - Schmidt doesn’t know if it’s a good idea to raise retirement age to 69 or raise earnings cap to $150,000. (Club for Growth pulling hair out) - Says that whatever she ends...
