Clear skies for Area 51 hacker By Kevin Poulsen, SecurityFocus Jan 27 2005 3:22PM Federal prosecutors formally dropped charges this month against an amateur astronomer who exposed a buried surveillance network surrounding the Air Force's mysterious "Area 51" air base in Nevada. Chuck Clark, 58, was charged in 2003 with a single count of malicious interference with a communications system used for the national defense, after prosecutors held him responsible for the disappearance of one of the wireless motion sensors buried beneath the desert land surrounding the facility. In a deal with the government last January, Clark agreed to enter...

Republican Websites Hacked in Protest of Inaugurations; DU shouting its approval Six Republican websites recently fell victim to left-wing cyber extremists, intent on shutting off what they do not want freedom-loving, free-speech backers to hear. Democratic Underground posters are praising the effort. The following is an excerpt of what is currently being posted on the DU site: NOT MY PRESIDENT, NOT MY WAR! THIS WHOLE SYSTEM IS ROTTEN TO THE CORE! RICHMOND, Va. - Computer hackers captured the names, Social Security (news - web sites) numbers and other information of more than 30,000 students and staff at George Mason University earlier this month, school officials said Monday. The university, which is in Fairfax, near Washington D.C., discovered on Jan. 3 that intruders had hacked into a server containing the protected information, school spokesman Daniel Walsch said. He said the university notified all students and staff. The school established an information hot line and turned the case over to campus police, Walsch said. "We don't know if this is an inside...

SAN JOSE – Susan Love's problems began with a smile. The New York City fund-raiser clicked on a happy-face attachment in a friend's e-mail last year. The virus crashed her computer within an hour. Love, 57, salvaged her data. But within a few months her computer's performance slowed to a crawl. In December 2003, she upgraded to a Sony Vaio with an extra-large monitor and Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Within a few days, "spyware" – programs that sneak onto computers uninvited – began sponging up valuable memory. Then her e-mail stopped arriving. Instead of crafting holiday e-mails, she spent...

DECEMBER 17, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Two 21-year-old Michigan men were sentenced -- one to nine years and one to 26 months in federal prison -- for conspiring to hack into the IT systems of national home center chain Lowe's Companies Inc. and stealing customer credit card information. In a Charlotte, N.C., courtroom on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lacy H. Thornburg sentenced Brian A. Salcedo to nine years in federal prison in what is believed to be the longest sentence handed down in a hacking case, according to the court. In a separate proceeding yesterday, Thornburg sentenced one of Salcedo's co-conspirators,...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - One of three Michigan men who hacked into the national computer system of Lowe's hardware stores and tried to steal customers' credit card information was sentenced Wednesday to nine years in federal prison. The government said it is the longest prison term ever handed down in a U.S. computer crime case. Brian Salcedo, 21, of Whitmore Lake, Mich., pleaded guilty in August to conspiracy and other hacking charges. Salcedo's sentence, imposed by U.S. District Judge Lacy Thornburg, exceeds that given to the hacker Kevin Mitnick, who spent more than 5 1/2 years behind bars, according to a...

WEST PALM BEACH — As commuters may recall, West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel took advantage of a roadside sign along the North Dixie Highway reconstruction project to express empathy with traffic-bound drivers this month. "I Am Mad Too! - Lois," her message flashed. Now, someone has responded anonymously to the mayor's frustration. Tuesday morning, the electronic board displayed an obscene message. Whoever left the message then locked the metal box housing the sign's keyboard, so that road workers were unable to change the words and had to shut the sign off altogether, which they did shortly after 9 a.m....

snip Fictional scenario At this year's Black Hat Briefing in Las Vegas, the annual Hacker court involved a scenario where a houseboat sailing up and down the Potomac River was able to use various unsecured wireless networks to access troop deployment plans from the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Presented in the form of a mock court case--including a real live federal court judge--the prosecution laid out how it identified various Web addresses used to launch the intrusion on the Naval Academy. However, when federal agents arrived at the homes matching the Internet addresses, they found the computer hard drives to...

In a world awash in fake e-mails designed to steal personal information, it was probably inevitable. This weekend, researchers discovered a near perfect imitation of a recent solicitation sent by the Kerry-Edwards campaign. The notice was a hoax, sending users off to a Web site controlled by a computer hacker. The e-mail appears to come from John Kerry's brother, Cam. "As John's brother, I have been by his side through tough fights," the e-mail begins. "While this campaign is one of the toughest, it is also the most important -- for our country, and for our world. I can tell...
