Our lovely, good twelve year old boxer dog MOLLY died this morning in our living room. It was not a complete surprise. As I truly said to Molly this morning, “Go ahead sweetie, you can go…….. it seems like the time ……good for you and good for God. No time to lose.” She died about 30 seconds after I said that to her. Mary and I wept some …….. held her paws with love …… and wished my nephew David were here with a beer or two. Molly was a complete sweetheart ……. and forget about the God messages. Molly was...
  • Still Friends? The trouble with old sitcoms (90's sitcom "Friends" was sexist and homophobic!)

Ahh, Friends. The US sitcom that took over the world. Millennials may look back fondly to the heady days of the ultimate 20-something Manhattan lifestyle enjoyed by our favourite flatmates - Monica, Ross, Chandler, Joey, Rachel and Phoebe. But nearly a quarter of a century - yikes! - since the show began, a new generation of fans are discovering the hit show for the first time on Netflix. And some of them are clearly finding it a bit uncomfortable. christina @cxorlando There is nothing I hate more than Ross in the male nanny episode of Friends. He is SO SEXIST...

Editor’s note: The following excerpt on “Teepee Etiquette — The Unwritten Law of the Lodge,” was taken from The Book of Woodcraft and Indian Lore (1912) by Ernest Thompson Seton. Seton said he gathered these maxims on American Indian hospitality “chiefly from observations of actual practice, but in many cases from formal precept.” They’re still largely apropo for modern hosts entertaining visiting guests in their “teepee” (though your mother-in-law may disagree).Teepee Etiquette — The Unwritten Law of the Lodge Be hospitable.Always assume that your guest is tired, cold, and hungry.Always give your guest the place of honor in the...

Dear X, You and I had a sweet friendship: we raised children and discussed husbands together; we traded perennials and casseroles in times of need; we visited one another in funeral homes, hospitals and churches; we met one anotherÂ’s families; we babysat and cleaned and laughed and cried together. I was the reason you homeschooled; you were the reason my dad got proper health assistance when he needed it. You unfriended me. When you unfriended me from Facebook, I cared not. But you also unfriended me from your life. That hurt deeply and it still does. Even though I never...

Ultimately, time passes. Time heals. I hope some day we could become non unfriend This 18 month long and polarizing American election has been truly surreal+absurd. One of the truly strange effects of this election is that certain of my female friendships that had endured for decades—through good times and bad times; through career highs and career failures; through personal disappointment;through joy, happiness and the thrill of victory and personal achievement; through marriages, children, divorce, sickness and even death of loved ones or partners; basically, through life- the good, the very bad and the truly ugly—could not withstand this friggin’...

Vanity. Well, after the last Presidential election, I was so crushed by the results, I jumped into my work, never coming up for air. I was so miserable and depressed as well as disappointed in my fellow Americans' lack of common sense and lack of vision that I became a hermit. I managed to kick the habit of being a political junkie. But, this cycle has given me hope for the Republic!

We're taking Larry deer hunting this weekend. After 35 years in the woods with Larry, sadly, this will be our last together. After 40 years at the same job, he finally had enough and retired this past spring. He's a mere 62 years old. He left his job on a Friday and started his new job the next Monday. Working at a local golf course. Cutting grass, doing maintenance, free lunch everyday and free golf on Mondays. He was in heaven. About three months ago, his eyesight was suddenly failing him. The eye doctor said that there was something affecting...

I would like to request your Prayers and thoughts for myself, and my family for the very unexpected passing of my wife. Many of you have seen me refer to her as Mrs. Rikkir, but her name was Patsy. She was 55, and mother to one daughter, and Mee Maw to three grandsons. She was a KY farm girl, who took a stupid NC city boy, and, 29 years ago, pulled him from a self destructive path, and instead gave him a path of love and responsibility. She was universally loved by almost all who met her. I have fielded...

Each year around 50,000 people die in New York, some alone and unseen. Yet death even in such forlorn form can cause a surprising amount of activity. Sometimes, along the way, a life’s secrets are revealed. They found him in the living room, crumpled up on the mottled carpet. The police did. Sniffing a fetid odor, a neighbor had called 911. The apartment was in north-central Queens, in an unassertive building on 79th Street in Jackson Heights. The apartment belonged to a George Bell. He lived alone. Thus the presumption was that the corpse also belonged to George Bell. It...

Are you a “Friends” fan? Well you might be interested to know that a scene where Chandler (Mathew Perry) and Monica (Courtney Cox) were on their way to their honeymoon was actually meant to be play out differently. The original scene, where Chandler makes a joke about bombs at airport security, was actually going to air on October 11, 2001 but was removed after 9/11 “due to material that could be considered insensitive” according to a note that plays before the deleted scene. The clip was initially uploaded in 2007, but has reemerged this week online and is being widely...

How is it possible to live in the midst of millions and still feel alone? Think of the walls between our homes, the single occupant cars inching along on our slow-moving parking lots known as LA freeways, and our dependence on digital Facebook “friends” and smart phone texting instead of actually getting together and talking. With hundreds of channels to choose from, the easiest way to host a “party” without having to feed anyone is to leave on your television. A different group of “friends” is just one station change away. The American dream has never been meant to...

I always find it distressing when a Facebook friend of mine posts something appallingly stupid. It’s one thing when someone you don’t know does it. A total stranger who you’ll never meet is quickly forgotten. Someone you know isn’t so easy to dismiss. It’s the same sort of unsettling feeling I get when I try to imagine the sort of people who buy those tacky commemorative plates they advertise in TV Guide. I realize there are people out there who have no sense of taste whatsoever. But I’m perfectly happy to remain in comfortable ignorance, knowing that I’ll probably never...
