Frederick William Benteen Brigadier General, United States Army Born at Petersburg, Virginia, on August 24, 1834, he was a career Army officer who distinguished himself in the Civil War. He was with the Seventh United States Cavalry, under the command of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, at the Battle of the Big Horn in June 1876.
