As a mother, it is almost impossible to imagine sending a child on a long and dangerous journey, alone, into the unknown. And yet that is what tens of thousands of parents in Mexico and Central America have done, hoping their children will find sanctuary in the United States. That tells you a great deal about the terrible violence and poverty in other countries. It also tells you a great deal about the United States.

On July 3, 1776, John Adams wrote a letter to his wife, Abigail, sharing with her what seemed to him wonderful news. Perhaps the most important decision ever was made by the Second Continental Congress, to declare independence from Great Britain. Such an occasion deserved to be remembered with “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” There would and should be “Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

Selectman Barry Greenfield would like to give police the authority to inspect gun safety at people's homes. The problem, he said, is that police do not have the authority, granted by a local ordinance, to enforce the law and inspect the safeguarding of guns at the homes of the 600 registered gun owners in town.

BLUFFDALE — More than 100 people gathered Thursday at Utah Veterans Memorial Park to support the cause of Restore the Fourth, a national group demanding an end to what its members say is unconstitutional government surveillance. Dan Garfield, a Saratoga Springs resident and Restore the Fourth supporter, said he believes the rally for Fourth Amendment rights was fitting for the Fourth of July because veterans have fought and died to maintain American rights. "We feel like the government has overstepped its bounds and gone contrary to what the Fourth Amendment stands for," he said. Garfield said the rally was initially...

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is marking the Fourth of July by thanking service members and their families, who he said "represent what is best in America." The president, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, hosted a barbecue and concert Wednesday for the families on the White House South Lawn. Obama saluted "this generation of heroes" for their service and sacrifice to defend American freedoms, specifically thanking them for bringing Osama bin Laden to justice and working to get out of Afghanistan.

It is great to be at world's largest democracy to celebrate the birthday of world's oldest democracy -- this was how US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell described America's Independence Day celebrations here. Addressing the gathering at the American centre, she said, "my belief is that we have much in common and India and US are very-very close with people. "We had shared colonial heritage and we each had struggled for our Independence and for our freedom," she said. Powell said both the democracies are vibrant and diverse and our relationship is flourishing. "You, the youth of India and also...

It should be safe to say that it is perfectly acceptable to cancel the fourth of July as a paid holiday. Particularly if you are a Freeper business owner. Many of the grievances stated as the reason for the original declaration has been far surpassed. At the Boiling point house hold it will no longer be celebrated but mourned. Old glory will forever be relegated to a historic relic of a once great nation. It no longer represents the uplifting patriotic, proud feeling it once did, nor does it represent a country currently worth fighting for. RIPUSA.

I"ll Have Another, hours from his historic bid for the Triple Crown in Saturday's Belmont Stakes, was scratched from the race Friday with tendonitis and retired. Originally favored at 4-5 on the morning-line for the 144th "Test of the Champion," I'll Have Another will be the 12th horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the first two jewels of the Triple Crown and not complete the sweep in the Belmont. see more videos But the crowd at Belmont Park, which would have numbered over 100,000 before the scratch, will still get to see the Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion. GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul warned that the National Defense Authorization Act, which was passed by Congress this month, will accelerate the country’s “slip into tyranny” and virtually assures “our descent into totalitarianism.” “The founders wanted to set a high bar for the government to overcome in order to deprive an individual of life or liberty,” Paul, the libertarian congressman, said Monday in a weekly phone message to supporters. “To lower that bar is to endanger everyone. When the bar is low enough to include political enemies, our descent into totalitarianism is virtually assured. The Patriot Act, as bad as...

In a landmark decision issued today in the criminal appeal of U.S. v. Warshak, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the government must have a search warrant before it can secretly seize and search emails stored by email service providers. Closely tracking arguments made by EFF in its amicus brief, the court found that email users have the same reasonable expectation of privacy in their stored email as they do in their phone calls and postal mail.

This year citizens will celebrate the Fourth of July in numbers as big as ever. In fact, they could spend upward of $3 billion on holiday weekend parties, food, entertainment and travel. According to the National Retail Federation's 2010 Independence Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey (conducted by BIGresearch, a consumer research firm based in Worthington, Ohio), 87.8 percent of all Americans will take part in some sort...
  • The last hurrah of summer

As the last firecracker sizzled in the night, I heaved a sigh of relief. It is not that I do not enjoy a good firework display, but after all, when you have seen one firecracker they are all just about the same. The thing they all have in common is they cost money. That is my problem. Blowing up bushels of dollars in the air does not seem very exciting to me. But the Fourth of July celebration has a different meaning for me. Certainly, I revere and celebrate the patriotic significance of the Fourth of July and faithfully pray...

It's that time of year... all three of my children are sick with summer colds. To cheer them up last night, I went to the folks at JibJab and, with the help of their website, produced this video. I've watched it about 700 times at this point, and I thought some of you might enjoy it as well. So before I begin writing my scathing analyses of Kagan, the Arizona immigration case, Obama's golf game and other pressing matters, I'm going with a humorous diversion :)
