Barring unforeseen (and astonishing) developments, President Bush will take a step closer to reelection today as the 538 presidential electors meet in each of the state capitals and the District of Columbia. The electors will fill out ballots, which will be sealed in an envelope from each state and sent to Washington, to be opened on Jan. 6 by the president of the Senate, who will read the results before both houses of Congress. The swearing-in of the new (or, in this case, reelected) president will occur at noon on inauguration day, Jan. 20.
