Just in time for the end of QE2, when the US needs every possible foreign buyer of US debt to step up to the plate, we get confirmation that yet another major foreign central bank has decided to not only not add to its US debt holdings, but to actively sell US Treasurys. The WSJ reports that "Russia will likely continue lowering its U.S. debt holdings as Washington struggles to contain a budget deficit and bolster a tepid economic recovery, a top aide to President Dmitry Medvedev said Saturday. "The share of our portfolio in U.S. instruments has gone down...

This can be used like the other zero dollars. Use in your education tactics of others about Obamacare. This is great background information on Michelle, and her views on how to handle medical care. Patient dumping to keep profits up at her hospital, and steer all the poor folks to other places to deal with. She got paid a ton of money to do this to mostly urban poor blacks in Chicago. And now the White House believes Michelle will be the secret weapon that gets Obamacare passed. Right. Not if this gets widely known and out there. That's why...

The Wal-Mart I visited had Louisiana Sweet Potatoes on sale for 15 cents per pound. It is a reminder of the days when Senator Jay Rockefeller's grandpappy drove competitors from the oil market with one penny a barrel of oil in East Texas. I am referring to the infamous anti-trust case against Standard Oil, and how the company was broken up by the Governement into Standard of California, Standard of Indiana, etc. Louisiana law does prevent the dumping of milk -- one cannot sale milk below the cost of the milk. Apparently, Wal-Mart must feel there are too many sweet...

WASHINGTON – A lawyer representing an Alaska gold mine urged the Supreme Court on Monday to uphold the mine owner's permit even though he acknowledged that the company's plan to dump metal waste into a nearby lake would kill all aquatic life. But mining company lawyer Theodore Olson told justices that the waste is more accurately defined as "fill." And, after a decade or more of mining, he said, the lake could be restocked with no permanent harm to the environment.

EU states call for China tariffs By Nikki Tait and Andrew Bounds in Brussels Published: February 26 2008 02:00 | Last updated: February 26 2008 02:00 In a sign of a backlash against cheap Chinese imports in the European Union, several countries are pushing for punitive tariffs on Chinese goods. Highlighting growing sensitivity as economic growth slows, European commissioners from Italy, Germany and France are trying to overrule a decision by Peter Mandelson, the British trade commissioner, not to recommend anti-dumping duties on air compressors from China. They have pressed for a discussion by all 27 commissioners tomorrow. However, Mr...

China toxic dumplings spark food scare in Japan By George Nishiyama Thu Jan 31, 1:50 AM ET Dozens more people in Japan on Thursday said they fell sick after eating Chinese-made food, a day after Japanese food companies recalled pesticide-contaminated dumplings from China that sickened 10 people. The food scare has triggered a nationwide probe into possible additional cases of food poisoning, while Japan's top government spokesman questioned China's attitude to food safety only weeks after the country said it had improved standards. Japanese media and opposition lawmakers have also suggested Japan's initial response to the problem may have been...

Congo arrests after toxic dumping Katanga has one of the world's richest belts of copper and cobalt Six people have been arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo for allegedly dumping highly radioactive minerals into a river, officials say. The authorities had ordered the nearly 20 metric tons of toxic material to be disposed of at an old uranium mine. But some of those charged with the safe disposal of the waste are reportedly among those who have been arrested. Residents of the large town of Likasi nearby are being warned not to use the water from the contaminated Mura...

Is China quietly dumping US Treasuries? By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard Last Updated: 6:55pm BST 05/09/2007 A sharp drop in foreign holdings of US Treasury bonds over the last five weeks has raised concerns that China is quietly withdrawing its funds from the United States, leaving the dollar increasingly vulnerable. Data released by the New York Federal Reserve shows that foreign central banks have cut their stash of US Treasuries by $48bn since late July, with falls of $32bn in the last two weeks alone. "This comes as a big surprise and it is definitely worrying," said Hans Redeker, currency chief at...

WINTON, N.C. — An animal-rights worker charged with dumping the bodies of euthanized dogs and cats apologized in court Thursday, saying she left the carcasses in a trash bin because they stank. Adria J. Hinkle denied, however, that she had ever promised overwhelmed animal shelters in northeastern North Carolina that the animals taken by her group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, would not be euthanized. Both sides rested Thursday afternoon after Hinkle and Andrew B. Cook, both PETA workers, testified in their own defense. They were arrested in June 2005, after police said they saw them dump bags...

Michigan moved closer Wednesday to banning imports of Canadian garbage, but the bill still has to be passed by the U.S. Congress. "With this package signed into law we will be sending a strong message to Washington and to Canada that we are not taking any more Canadian trash," the bill's sponsor, Rep. Dan Acciavatti, said. Michigan's state Senate passed the bill, and then the state's House of Representatives followed suit. The U.S. Department of Environmental Quality says about 29 per cent of the trash dumped in Michigan landfills in the last fiscal year came from Canada and other states....

Lansing, Mich. — State legislators on Thursday took another step toward barring Canadian trash from Michigan landfills, but the ban will not take effect unless Congress also takes action. The state Senate voted 34-1 to approve a bill that would prohibit Canadian and other foreign waste from being dumped in Michigan, if Congress authorizes it. The legislation now heads back to the state House. While the legislation received overwhelming approval, some Democrats criticized it. "Since Congress is very unlikely to pass this law, the bill itself is very much symbolic," said Sen. Liz Brater, D-Ann Arbor. "It's window dressing. ......

Budapest to wipe out dog waste Wed Aug 24, 2005 11:14 AM BST BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary's capital is launching a 200-million-forint (500.000 pounds) campaign to rid itself of hundreds of tonnes of dog waste which land on the city's sidewalks and parks each year, the daily Nepszabadsag reported. City officials estimate that Budapest's 400,000 dogs produce around 14,600 tonnes of dog waste each year, more than the weight of the Eiffel Tower and the London Eye combined, creating a health hazard and a public nuisance. The city will spend the money on public awareness television advertisements, hundreds of dog...

EU-China Trade Problems Risk Spreading By PAUL AMES, Associated Press Writer Wed Jun 8, 7:36 AM ET BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union's trade dispute with China risks spreading from textiles to footwear after the EU released data Wednesday showing Chinese shoe imports had surged since the end of quotas at the start of the year. Responding to concerns of European shoemakers, the European Commission said imports of leather shoes and textile slippers had soared nearly eight-fold in the first four months of 2005, pushing down prices on European markets by 28 percent. "The European Commission has noted the concerns...

Democrats don't want to have another presidential candidate like John Kerry, and who can blame them? So, the AP reports, they're thinking of revamping their nominating process. Kerry got the nomination because he was standing nearby when Howard Dean imploded. The nominating process was so front-loaded neither John Edwards nor Wesley Clark had a real chance to catch him. Two plans presented at a meeting last weekend in Chicago would continue to allow Iowa and New Hampshire to have the first delegate selection contests. A third, presented by Michigan Democrats, would rotate the honor of going first. All three propose...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - In a decision that affects coastal waters nationwide, a federal judge ruled Thursday that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency can no longer allow ships to dump ballast water containing nonnative species without a permit. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ordered the EPA to immediately repeal regulations that exempt ship operators from having to obtain a permit to discharge the water, which often contains species from other countries that are considered harmful to native ecosystems. "This is a slam dunk for healthy oceans," said Sarah Newkirk, clean water advocate for the Washington, D.C.-based Ocean Conservancy. "The court...

SACRAMENTO (AP) - State water regulators fined one of the world's largest cheese factories $4 million for illegally flushing waste on Merced County fields for nearly three years, creating a stink for neighbors and polluting water. The action Wednesday against Hilmar Cheese Co. by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board occurred the same day the company's co-owner, Chuck Ahlem, resigned as the state's undersecretary of agriculture, saying he needed to tend to wastewater issues. The penalty is for just less than three years of daily water pollution violations since January 2002. But it follows a record of nearly...
