Michigan Senate votes to ban Canadian trash

Lansing, Mich. — State legislators on Thursday took another step toward barring Canadian trash from Michigan landfills, but the ban will not take effect unless Congress also takes action.

The state Senate voted 34-1 to approve a bill that would prohibit Canadian and other foreign waste from being dumped in Michigan, if Congress authorizes it. The legislation now heads back to the state House.

While the legislation received overwhelming approval, some Democrats criticized it.

"Since Congress is very unlikely to pass this law, the bill itself is very much symbolic," said Sen. Liz Brater, D-Ann Arbor. "It's window dressing. ... We've been waiting on Congress to act on this issue for decades."

Senators rejected attempts by Democrats to tie the measure to bills that would increase the dumping fee on trash from 21 cents per ton to $6 per ton and extend a moratorium on landfill expansions.

Brater said Michigan's dumping fee is too low, encouraging other states and Canada to bring their waste here. But Republicans are worried constituents would have to pay more if the higher fees were in place.

"Municipalities cannot afford to pay this tipping fee," said Sen. Gerald Van Woerkom, R-Norton Shores. "They've been dinged by revenue sharing (cuts), and they know they can't raise millages in their communities to do it."

The federal legislation authorizing the trash ban is pending in the U.S. House.

For those in the U.S., the metropolitan Toronto area has no landfills or incinerators for trash because of environmental and NIMBY concerns. Instead, all the trash is trucked 250 miles away to Michigan for land fill disposal. Canada has all that open, uninhabited space but will not deal with their own trash problems. They simply pay to have the U.S. take it. I hope this goes through because Toronto is so smug about it's environmentalism. They banned household pesticides and herbicides, for example. I hope this makes them take a serious look at their own problems.

>>>Keep Canadian garbage OUT of the USA! Canada must deal with its own trash!

Why? If someone can make some money off of it, why not allow them. If dumping is prevented in Canada, it seems like an opportunity for a landfill owner to get a higher rate than for US garbage.

Trudeau is dead but Canadian trash should not be going the Michigan.

It just makes it easier for Canadian cities to avoid their disposal problems.

You said it. Much of Canada's politcal problems are due to the influx of US commies/socialists who ran north.

US landfills make enough handling US trash. Let Canada dispose of its own trash!

If someone in NC thinks they can make some money off of it, why not? Any why would they have to accept a rock bottom rate? Whatever happened to what the market will bear. They've got to get rid of it, so they are likely willing to pay a high price to remove it.
If Canadian garbage has be disposed of in Canada, then does all Michigan garbage have to be disposed of in Michigan - All Detroit garbage in Detroit - Each household's garbage in its own yard?
What is your opinion on the nuclear storage facility in Nevada. Should each state be responsinble for setting up its own storage or should they be allowed to ship it out?

You want to limit the amount of money that a landfill operator can make? That is not a very free market position.
