DETROIT -- Marco Scutaro singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Sunday night to complete a four-game sweep and win their second World Series title in three years. Ryan Theriot, who went hitless for St. Louis in Game 7 of last year's Series, singled softly into right field off Phil Coke opening the 10th. Brandon Crawford sacrificed, nearly bunting the ball past Coke. Angel Pagan struck out and Scutaro singled into short center field as Theriot slid home ahead of Austin Jackson's throw.

The New York Yankees' World Series hopes may have just taken a hit, as shortstop Derek Jeter fractured his left ankle in game one of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. Jeter suffered the injury while fielding a ground ball in the top of the 12th inning, with New York trailing 5-4. He immediately went down in pain, staying face down momentarily.

News reports out of New York and Detroit are saying that former Minnesota Twin outfielder Delmon Young was arrested in a drunken incident early Friday in Manhattan. The Detroit Free Press quoted New York City police detective Joseph Cavitolo as saying "there was an incident at the hotel [and] some anti-Semitic remarks" during a physical clash between Young and a 32-year-old man at about 2:30 a.m

President Barack Obama is coming to the Motor City for a $1 million pizza party being thrown for him compliments of Denise Ilitch, daughter of Little Caesars’ founders Mike and Marian Ilitch. Ilitch is opening her home April 18 for the fundraiser where movers and shakers are being asked to pony up thousands to add to his re-election coffer while getting a chance to rub shoulders with the most powerful man on the planet. “I’m honored to have been asked,” by the Obama campaign to host,” Ilitch said of the event she and husband, Jim Scalici, will hold at their...

Jim Leyland was emphatic enough. Seeing Justin Verlander on the mound again this postseason was going to be the best thing, he said, because it would come in the World Series. As for the rest of the American League Championship Series, Verlander wouldn’t even be a topic. Not in the Detroit Tigers’ manager’s mind, anyway. And it proved a moot point after the game, gutsy, but gimpy Tigers took one of the worst elimination beatings in postseason history in Arlington Saturday night. If the Tigers or their minions weren’t going to see Verlander the rest of the postseason, it’s probably...

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Yankees say they are finished flashing hand signals from the stands—at least for now. General manager Brian Cashman confirmed that the team received a call Saturday from the commissioner’s office inquiring about a club employee relaying information to players after each pitch on opening day. The Daily News reported Saturday that broadcaster Keith Olbermann, a New York season-ticket holder, put a photo on Twitter of Brett Weber, a Yankees baseball operations coaching assistant, holding up four fingers toward the field during Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Baseball Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson has been placed in hospice care, suffering from dementia, family members said Wednesday. Anderson, 76, managed the Cincinnati Reds to World Series wins in 1975 and 1976 guided the Detroit Tigers to a world championship in 1984. Family spokesman Dan Ewald told the Detroit Free Press Anderson was under care in Thousand Oaks, Calif., and family members wished "to express appreciation to all friends and fans for the support and kindness they have shown throughout Sparky's career and retirement." His illness is "the type of ailment...

The nearest I ever got to Sparky Anderson in person was four years ago. At a funeral. I'm not even close to making this one up. Larry Sherry, the 1959 World Series MVP for the Los Angeles Dodgers (Anderson was once a minor league infielder in the Dodger organisation, before spending a miserable season as a good-glove-bad-bat Philadelphia Phillies infielder), had died after a long bout with cancer. I wrote a pleasant little tributary to the old righthander and, within hours of its publication, I received a pleasant communique from Sherry's son-in-law. He thanked me for the kind words and...

Proceeds from the sale of the World Series trophy and MVP award will go to the Kirk Gibson Foundation to support Michigan State athletics and to help fund partial scholarships at the two Michigan high schools where his parents taught... After going through the stuff, he decided he was ready to part with the famous home run bat, batting helmet and home and road uniforms from the 1988 World Series. The uniform he wore when he hit that home run off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley has never been washed. Why? "That's just the way it is," he said. The bat's appearance...

wrote yesterday about broadcasters, but I wish I didn't have to write this one: the legendary Ernie Harwell, voice of the Tigers for 42 years, has incurable cancer. Harwell is 91. The grace and strength with which he is responding to this news is staggering, but not surprising. I have had the pleasure of knowing Harwell a little bit through the years, and he is one of the finest people I have ever met in baseball. When I wrote a story about broadcasters last year, I was thrilled to receive an e-mail from Harwell telling me he liked the piece....

DETROIT // Next door to Comerica Park sits St. John's Episcopal Church, where an electronic sign beckons with bright orange letters, "Pray here for the Tigers." The plea should erase any doubt that religion and baseball intersect sharply in the Motor City. But the role sports plays - the role the Tigers play - can be a bit tougher to dissect.
