Twitter was filled with patriotic declarations, pictures of fireworks and descriptions of highly-caloric barbeques on the Fourth of July. For a few celebrities, however, the day served only as a reminder of past injustices. With Independence Day just around the corner, most Americans still strongly agree with the central tenets of the document that declared the nation's independence from Great Britain 236 years ago. The Declaration of Independence, ratified by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, asserts that “governments derive their only just powers from the consent of the governed.” A new Rasmussen Reports national survey finds that 70% of American Adults agree with that statement, up from 66% last year and up from 56% in 2008. Just 13% now disagree with this assertion, but 17% are undecided.

This Friday, April 13th is the birth day of Thomas Jefferson. In recognition of his birthday I thought we’d revisit the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. On the surface the meaning of the Declaration may be self-evident, but the true meaning of many of the sentences and phrases escapes most people. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday evening that the 2010 healthcare law, which prompted complaints from conservatives that Democrats far exceeded their constitutional authority, actually helps people meet the goal outlined in the Declaration of Independence, which promotes mankind's rights to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." As part of its preparations for possible mass riots among Judea and Samaria Arabs, the IDF is taking one of its more effective riot control methods and helping it go airborne.
