...But as the members of the Intellectual Dark Web become genuinely popular, they are also coming under more scrutiny. Both men stiffen as VG confronts them. – Go ahead and publish what you know about us now, if you think it’s true, but be prepared for the consequences, says Jon. After Charlottesville and the murder of Heather Heyer, hitherto Nazi-friendly internet companies have found their boots and their banhammers. The angry right has for some time anticipated this eventuality, and colonized or established replicas of key services and platforms. 8chan, Voat and Gab are the most well-known examples, respectively resembling 4chan, Reddit and Twitter. Adi Robertson writes that the internet's plumbing, the world of domain name registrars and load mitigation, will be harder to replicate. Why the alt-right can’t build an alt-internet. Even if such a registrar could ignore bad PR, activists could still lodge complaints with the registries, which...

In the aftermath of Google’s recent firing of James Damore, much of the criticism of the company has focused on its utterly hypocritical and alarming approach to free political speech by perceived political enemies, particularly on sites like YouTube, where videos featuring disfavored political views may soon be placed in a digital no-man’s land.Conservatives and right-leaning YouTube commentators have cried bloody murder, and rightly so. However, while a focus on this is encouraging and entirely appropriate, it completely understates the scope of Google’s willingness to crack down on free speech on YouTube in a misguided attempt to subject the website...

The sting, dubbed Operation Elysium, was launched on the eve of the G20 in Hamburg, throwing the global summit into disarray after key members of at least two European delegations were held by police. The Tor Project, the foundation of the crime-infiltrated "dark Web," is trying to soften its public image — but without backing away from the anonymous Web-surfing technology that has made it so controversial with law enforcement and intelligence agencies. For about a decade, the Massachusetts-based nonprofit has provided free software that lets activists and political dissidents visit websites and exchange messages outside the scrutiny of oppressive governments. But the same software HAS ALLOWED HIDDEN MARKETS FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, GUNS, ILLEGAL DRUGS AND STOLEN CREDIT CARD INFORMATION TO FLOURISH, while heightening U.S. intelligence agencies' worries about technology providing an unbreakable wall...
