WASHINGTON — These Congress members are sleeping on the job — and defending their right to do it. Crying poverty amid decade-long stagnant salaries and Washington’s steep cost of living, an increasing number of House lawmakers have turned into professional squatters at night, hitting the sack in their Capitol Hill offices — on everything from cots in closets to futons stashed behind constituent couches — to save a few bucks during the work week. “Washington is too expensive,” said Rep. Dan Donovan (R-SI), who credits the cot that he sleeps on in a tiny alcove in his office as the...

Staten Island Rep. Dan Donovan is locked in a surprisingly close race with Democratic challenger Max Rose, according to a poll released Tuesday. Donovan leads Rose by 4 points — 44 to 40 percent, the New York Times Upshot/Siena College survey found. Green Party candidate Henry Gardel gets 1 percent and 15 percent of likely voters remain undecided, the poll said. The 11th congressional district that encompasses Staten Island and southern Brooklyn has been considered a safe Republican seat. Staten Island accounts for about 70 percent of the vote and Brooklyn 30 percent.

The “Unmasking Antifa Act of 2018,” legislation introduced in the House, carries a potential 15-year prison sentence for those caught engaging in behaviors typically associated with the “antifa” movement of anti-fascist activists. Under the act, anyone “wearing a mask” or in disguise who “injures, oppresses, threatens, or intimidates any person … in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege” is subject to a fine or up to 15 years in prison. The bill was introduced in the House last month but received renewed attention on Tuesday after alt-right personality Mike Cernovich encouraged his followers to call their...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - When Staten Island's seat in Congress becomes vacant, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis will be the first to jump at it. Passed over last year in favor of then-District Attorney Daniel Donovan as the GOP candidate in a special election, Malliotakis is just as eager now to run for the House of Representatives, she indicated in a recent interview. The May 2015 special election saw Donovan elected to fill the remainder of Michael Grimm's term -- he had resigned in disgrace after pleading guilty to tax evasion.

In a rare moment of confusion, the usually well informed Rush Limbaugh talked about something he seems not to understand. In a few months there will be a special election to fill the now vacated seat in the 11th Congressional District which is largely on Staten Island. The seat was held by a Republican who has taken a plea and awaits sentencing for an income tax related crime. For most of America, especially liberal America, Staten Island in a mysterious place that used to have the largest garbage dump in the world and is filled with Right Wing Republicans. Unfortunately...

the two iffiest offices, ones that could go either way, are the race for New York Attorney General and New York State Comptroller. The attorney general contest is between Manhattan resident and Democratic state Sen. Eric Schneiderman and Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan. snip although the chances of Gillibrand’s opponent, Joe DioGuardi, catching fire are still a possibility, albeit a long shot. snip The race for Attorney General is a lot more problematic for the Democrats. First of all, Schneiderman, never known as Mr. Personality among his colleagues in the state Senate, is not thought to be a favorite...

Mayor Bloomberg waded into the thicket of the attorney general's race today, praising Republican candidate Dan Donovan as somebody who would be "a spectacular attorney general," while back-handedly slapping his Democratic opponent, state Senator Eric Schneiderman. I think [Donovan] would focus on what he needs to do going forward as attorney general, and that is enforce the law, prosecute people when they break the law, and leave being governor to the governor. You always get worried when you have a candidate for attorney general that wants to use that office to enact a social agenda. I don't think that's good....
