“In clubhouses we’ve got racist, sexist, homophobic jokes or flat-out problems,” Desmond wrote. “We’ve got cheating. We’ve got a minority issue from the top down. One African American GM. Two African American managers. Less than 8% Black players. No Black majority team owners.”

The city of Hartford's investment in the Downtown North development, which includes construction of the Dunkin' Donuts Park baseball stadium, exceeds $102 million to date, according to an audit from Hartford's Internal Audit Commission released publicly Friday. Originally priced at $56 million for initial construction funding and bonded at $63.3 million, the unfinished stadium's pricetag has now jumped to $71.7 million, the audit said. For the overall Downtown North development, which includes road work, engineering and other infrastructure work, the total costs to the city are $102.5 million to date, the audit report said. That $102 million does not include...

The Hartford Yard Goats are rewriting the lyrics to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” after announcing earlier this month its Dunkin’ Donuts Park will be peanut-free. The Yard Goats, Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are believed to be the first team to ban peanuts for an entire season. Peanuts are prevalent at baseball stadiums, making it difficult for children with peanut allergies to attend games. The Yard Goats held two peanut-free games last year where the park banned the item and did a deep clean of the stadium.

A Colorado man says he was kicked out of a baseball game after he tossed a home run ball back onto the field. Brandon Sanchez told KDVR that he, his wife and stepsons were enjoying the Colorado Rockies-San Francisco Giants game Tuesday night when the Giants hit a home run. The home run ball landed in Sanchez's hands. Although his stepsons were excited, Sanchez said he couldn't care less. “I threw the ball back just because it was San Francisco’s home run and I wanted the Story home run ball,” he said, referring to Rockies rookie shortstop Trevor Story. Moments...

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Major League Baseball player Jose Reyes, the shortstop for the Colorado Rockies, was arrested on Halloween after allegedly assaulting his wife in their Maui hotel room, sources say. Reyes and his wife, Katherine, were allegedly arguing in their Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea room that afternoon. His wife told responding officers that Reyes grabbed her off the bed and shoved her. Sources say she also told police that he grabbed her throat and shoved her into the sliding glass balcony door. Security called police and Reyes was arrested for abuse of a family or household member....

An otherwise standard 8-3 victory by the New York Yankees over the Colorado Rockies did feature one unusual moment on Saturday afternoon. It's what you see pictured above and in the video below. Two different images of the same Troy Tulowitzki(notes) swing, showing two different points of contact on the baseball. A double-hitzki, if you will, for a basehit to left field. Tulo was jammed a bit on the fourth inning offering from CC Sabathia(notes). Amazingly, or maybe more so luckily, he was able to almost catch that ball with his bat, holding it in place to make contact again...

This is typically the purview of the excellent blog Vin Scully is My Homeboy, but I was so excited about it I couldn't wait to see if he'd get around to doing it himself. UPDATE: Courtesy of Deadspin, here's the audio:... Check out this transcript of Vin Scully's call of Troy Tulowitzki's sixth-inning at-bat last night in the Rockies-Dodgers tilt:...

"When it's third-and-10, you can take the milk drinkers and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time." That's the authoritative word from Green Bay Packers legend Max McGee, who died on Oct. 20 at 75 after he fell raking leaves from his roof. Many old-time athletes and sports writers have felt the same way. Didn't Babe Ruth set records while satisfying his voracious appetite for hot dogs, booze, and sex? Character counts, but runs count more, right? That's what the Colorado Rockies thought until 2004, when fastballer Denny Neagle was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. The Rockies, who had finished...

The Rockies Get Off Their Knees [posted online on October 23, 2007] Twenty-one wins in twenty-two games. An improbable run to the World Series. One of the hottest streaks to end a season in the history of the game. And not two pitchers the average fan could even name. Ladies and gents, your Colorado Rockies: a team performing what even an atheist could call a baseball miracle. And "miracle" is an appropriate term for a team that riled the baseball world last year by claiming that filling the dugout with Christian players would grease the skids to greatness. Last year...

DENVER, Oct. 22 — As a Jewish player who attended a Catholic high school and a Lutheran university, Jason Hirsh knows what being a religious minority feels like. So last December, when he was traded to the Colorado Rockies, Hirsh wondered if what he had heard about his new organization was true. Rockies General Manager Dan O’Dowd says his Christian faith leads him to seek out players with strong moral values. Now, Hirsh said not once during the season had he felt uncomfortable with the place Christianity occupies within the organization. “There are guys who are religious, sure, but they...

DENVER — The Colorado Rockies suspended World Series ticket sales Monday after overwhelming demand crashed their computer system. “Right now we’re shutting the system down,” club spokesman Jay Alves announced outside Coors Field, drawing boos from fans. “We expect to be online at some point.” “We’re as frustrated and disappointed as they are,” Alves said. Alves had said last week that the Rockies were prepared for any computer problems. On Monday, there were 8.5 million attempts to connect with the computers in the first 90 minutes after sales started, he said, and only several hundred tickets had been sold before...

Governor Bill Ritter (D-Colo) boasted that the success of the Colorado Rockies baseball team shows that the Democrats’ more liberal approach to government is superior to that of the “penny-pinching misers who would deny the people’s right to enjoy sports.” “There are those who say that the government has no business getting involved in professional sports, that it is unfair to tax the general population in order to subsidize millionaire players and multimillionaire team owners, they call these ‘bread-and-circuses’ outlays and say they are outside the scope of legitimate government, but now that the Rockies have won their way to...

Since entering the Major Leagues in 1993, the Colorado Rockies have made the playoffs only once. Last year, they had the second-worst record in Major League baseball, and the previous few seasons were not much better. It’s clear that things had to change, starting with getting better ballplayers. But what makes the Rockies different from other baseball franchises is how the Rockies define better. Obviously, the Rockies’ primary concern, like everybody else’s, is with the player’s performance on the field. There’s no escaping the importance of hitting, pitching, and fielding. However, CEO Charlie Monfort and General Manager Dan O’Dowd don’t...

The Twins once had a player who claimed to be a devoted Christian and who did quite a bit of proselytizing in the clubhouse. The problem was that many of his teammates didn't take him seriously because they were convinced he was an exhibitionist. This fellow liked to parade around the clubhouse in the buff. And that included off days when most guys just came in to pick up their mail. But the team has had some dandy Christian ballplayers over the years, including Rick Aguilera and Greg Gagne. On the other hand, the most overtly religious player on the...

Wednesday, April 30, 2003Punishing Jones not the answer By Rob NeyerESPN.com Dipping into the ol' e-mailbag today ... Hey Rob, I just read about Todd Jones' anti-gay remarks and the Colorado Rockies corresponding response. And the only adjective the Rockies can come up with in response to Jones' disgusting tirade is "unfortunate"? If there were really any justice, Todd Jones would be suspended, or even fired, by either the team or MLB. Making anti-gay remarks like that is right in line with racist remarks in reference to Hispanics, African-Americans, etc. and there is no place in that for baseball, America...

Plans for a benefit, designed to assist major league ballplayers in the event of a work stoppage, were announced today by the Casper Rockies Professional Baseball Club. It is the Rockies intention to hold a canned food drive on Friday, August 30, should major league players follow through with their threat to strike on that date. On August 30, fans may exchange two cans of food for a free general admission ticket (subject to availability) to the Casper Rockies 7:05pm game against the Provo Angels. Should the strike last for an extended period of time, all canned goods collected that...
