The University of Queensland and the NÉEL Institute has shown that, as far as quantum physics is concerned, the chicken and the egg can both come first. Dr Jacqui Romero from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems said that in quantum physics, cause-and-effect is not always as straightforward as one event causing another. "The weirdness of quantum mechanics means that events can happen without a set order," she said. "Take the example of your daily trip to work, where you travel partly by bus and partly by train. "Normally, you would take the bus then the train,...
  • Parable of Johnny Didn't Build That: Which Came First Chicken or the Egg?

This week, Obama opined that American ingenuity has nothing to do with individual success. Johnny did not build his business, and Suzy didn't build hers. To quote the President: "somebody else made that happen." But Johnny had the idea, and then he made it happen with "hard" work (which O should appreciate because he often tells us how really "hard" his job is).  Johnny's family and/or friends may have joined him in the endeavor, and maybe they all made it happen, but it had nothing to do with Government. Dittos for Suzy. If Johnny and/or Suzy had an inspiring teacher,...

A HEN produced a live chick in a freak birth at a poultry farm in central Sri Lanka, a veterinary surgeon says. The vet in charge of the town of Welimada, PR Yapa, said the egg appeared to have incubated inside the hen for 21 days and the hen died when it gave birth to the chick. "I had only heard about such aberrations, but I was able to see it for myself today," Dr Yapa told AFP. He said the free-range farm owners alerted the local veterinary authorities after the highly unusual phenomenon and he performed a post-mortem examination...

One of the most puzzling and famous life questions has stumped people for generations. It's the question of which came first: the chicken or the egg? In order for there to be an egg, a chicken would have had to lay it. In order for there to be a chicken, it would have had to hatch from an egg. It seems as though either answer could be the correct answer; until now. Dr. Colin Freeman from Sheffield University along with colleagues from Warwick University have figured it all out. Their research project originally aimed to figure out how animals make...
