Andrew Faulkner, 23, was arrested Monday night inside the north Santa Rosa Catholic school where authorities believe he went on a vandalism rampage after school hours, causing about $100,000 in damage. At his arraignment on charges of burglary, vandalism and being under the influence of methamphetamine, Faulkner waved to Judge Arthur Wick, said “hi” and concluded his brief appearance with a message. “By the way, I’m Satan,” said Faulkner,...

LONDON (CNS) -- Catholic officials are investigating claims that a severely deformed baby was born in a perfectly normal condition after the child's mother prayed to Cardinal John Henry Newman for a miracle. Andrea Ambrosi, the Vatican lawyer in charge of Cardinal Newman's cause for canonization, has revealed in a BBC program to be broadcast Sept. 18 that he hopes the inexplicable healing may be the miracle needed to canonize Cardinal Newman as Britain's next saint. Pope Benedict XVI will beatify Cardinal Newman at a huge open-air Mass in Birmingham's Cofton Park Sept. 19, the last day of his four-day...

London, England, Nov 10, 2009 / 12:09 am (CNA).- Deacon Jack Sullivan, whose cure from crippling back pain advanced the beatification of Servant of God John Henry Cardinal Newman, preached from the pulpit of Westminster Cathedral on the Feast of St. John Lateran. He talked about his miraculous cure and praised Cardinal Newman’s spiritual insights and “extraordinary” foresight. Deacon Sullivan, a permanent deacon from the Archdiocese of Boston, discussed the Basilica of St. John Lateran’s history and described it as “a magnificent sign of victory” for the countless Christian martyrs in the early centuries of the Church. “The basilica now...

Cardinal Newman, the Anglican cleric whose conversion to Roman Catholicism scandalised Victorian Britain, appeared closer to sainthood today after his case was backed by a senior Vatican official.   Cardinal Newman The head of the Vatican department that examines the causes of saints said that he would like the Cardinal's beatification - the step before canonisation - to take place very soon. His comments suggest that the Vatican is close to attributing a miracle to Cardinal Newman, which means that the 19th century cleric could be beatified before the end of the year. The controversial theologian and writer of the...

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,This day that has brought us together here in Birmingham is a most auspicious one. In the first place, it is the Lord’s day, Sunday, the day when our Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead and changed the course of human history for ever, offering new life and hope to all who live in darkness and in the shadow of death. That is why Christians all over the world come together on this day to give praise and thanks to God for the great marvels he has worked for us. This particular Sunday...

In converting to Catholicism Cardinal Newman lost friends and courted controversy, but the strength of his conscience has roused the passion of the Pope, says, Christopher Howse. The Pope, though invited by the Queen, is coming to Britain with the keen purpose of beatifying John Henry Newman. It will be a treat for him. He has been a fan for 65 years, since his days at seminary. “Newman was not a topic like any other,” the 95-year-old Alfred Läpple, Joseph Ratzinger’s former prefect of studies, remembers of those years. “He was our passion.” Newman much resembles the Pope’s big hero, St...

On the site of the Cause for John Henry Newman, they draw attention in their "Thought for the Day" for November 14th to Newman's 1831 sermon (given while yet an Anglican), "Ceremonies of the Church" -- later published in his Parochial and Plain Sermons. While it was indeed written within his Anglican period, and thus contains some thoughts which are formed by that specific context, the sermon certainly contains much of broader relevance and is filled with many pertinent insights. The entire sermon may be read here, but here are some substantial excerpts -- which also attempt to keep as...

Cardinal Newman’s eloquence as a preacher and as a writer is well known; less well known is his gift for and appreciation of music. Throughout his long life, Newman approached music as a performing musician (violinist and chamber music), composer, and writer on music.Newman’s love for music was probably encouraged by his father. Ever played capture the flag? It's a great game. Two teams attempt to capture the opposing team's flag while trying not to lose their own. There's a lot of running, dodging and sneaking. If you play too defensively then you have no chance of catching the other team's flag, but if you all go running after the other team's flag then you will probably lose your own. The key to winning is good teamwork, strategy, a bit of misdirection and somebody who can run really fast. The Catholic Church in England and Wales is currently engaged in an international game...

Conversion of Cardinal Newman 1391. Did not Cardinal Newman lose faith in the Catholic Church before he died? No. During his own lifetime the rumor was published by the "Globe" newspaper that he had been disillusioned by Catholicism, and was going to return to the Church of England. Newman at once had his denial published in the same paper. He wrote saying, "I have not had one moment's wavering of trust in the Catholic Church ever since I was received into her fold. I have no intention, and never have had any intention, of leaving the Catholic Church and becoming...
