May 22, 2000 - 07:50 PM Report: Police Bypassing Courts to Hang Onto Drug Money The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Police across the country sidestep state laws to ensure that millions of dollars seized in drug raids and traffic stops remain in police hands, The Kansas City Star reports. In a yearlong investigation, The Star examined more than two dozen states to determine how law enforcement officers handled forfeited drug money and property. The newspaper found that in each state examined, police used federal law enforcement to circumvent their own state laws and keep most of the ...
  • East-West: See this movie!! We're not a police state...yet!

Please see the movie "East-West". Yes it is a foreign film with subtitles, but it is a great love story of a family that moves from France back to Russia after the end of WWII. They are idealists hoping to help Russia recover from the horrors of war and rebuild the perfect communist utopia. As you all know, the reality was MUCH different. Watching this movie should hopefully silence a few of the yahoos who irresponsibly suggest that we are already living in a police state. Nothing could be further from the truth. Saying such things may give you a ...
  • Polesitters Overrepresented in Polls?

Most of us here at FreeRepublic are leery of polls, and rightfully so. I took some basic college courses in statistics while getting an engineering degree. One of the basic theories that came out of that course was that in order to determine the opinions of a population of people you had to sample a a number roughly equal to the square root of the population. So, for example, if you wanted to know the opinions of a million people, you had to poll about 1000. In order to know what the American people think (about 270,000,000) you would need ...

Rush Limbaugh Program | March 2000 | Who would fardels bear?
Today on the Rush Limbaugh program, Rush read an e-mail from a regular listener (who's name escapes me at the moment.) The listener's theory was that Independents believe as they do because they don't want to be labeled and are leary about joining established groups. He claimed that there was something mildly elitist about Independents: they claimed that their opinions were somehow better because they weren't influenced by others. In Freeper terms: Independents believe themselves NOT to be sheeple. My own theory is more radical. I believe that Independents not only want to separate themselves from established groups, but established ...

In another thread, people are all excited about the temporary postponement of an income tax in Tennessee. I wonder if we should be so happy about recent events whereby local and state Republican majorities lower taxes while a Democrat-controlled national government increases them. It seems that Milton Friedman's Law of Unintended Consequences is at work: as local Republicans successfully lower local taxes and national Republicans fail to lower national taxes, the percentage of our taxes going to the Feds increases. Thus rather than getting less centralization, we get more. Lower local taxes will allow Clinton to justify spending more federal ...
  • Bishop Sheen on Speed!

Can someone help me find the text of one of Bishop Sheen's radio addresses? It was the one where he described how people have now replaced direction with speed: they don't know where they are headed so they start driving faster! I never heard the original address. I just heard it by way of audio tape. In fact, it may never have aired, and only been a tape, but I doubt that.

If you go to Dick "toesucker" Morris's quarter-million dollar website, you may note something suspicious... You can figure out which way he wants you to vote by finding out which answer pops up in the graph as GREEN. At first I thought all the Yes answers would be Green and all the No answers would be Red, but alas this isn't the case. If you vote Yes on vouchers (you evil conservative you) then you will be rewarded by seeing a tall Red spike! Subtle, very subtle!!

UF research ties homosexual behavior in beetle to evolution GAINESVILLE -- In a new hypothesis for a behavior observed in a number of species, two researchers say the process of natural selection may explain homosexual behavior in a beetle that preys on citrus in South Florida. An article about the research co-authored by an Israeli researcher and a University of Florida professor is scheduled to appear in the Oct. 21 edition of the journal Nature. Ally R. Harari, a researcher at the Volcani Center at Ben-Gurion University in Israel, and Jane Brockmann, professor and chair of UF's department of zoology, ...

    Drudge Report | 6/21/99 | who_would_fardels_bear
The Drudge Report mentioned an upcoming concert by Michael Jackson in Korea. The good news is that the tickets aren't selling well. The bad news is that Jackson has somehow gotten a number of quite popular stars to appear with him. I realize that Jackson has not yet been convicted of any crimes, but there is enough suspicion in my mind that I believe him to be a very bad character. In any case, does anyone know of a list (or a source of information) for all personalities that have worked or appeared with Jackson since his civil litigation became ...
